logon not picking up profile... sometimes

Got an odd one here, we have a generic pupil logon that's tied down tighter than a tight thing. It's got a mandatory profile that's been working fine for at least 3 years now.

 

I logged onto a machine this morning with pupil and it totally didn't pick up the profile, rebooted the machine and it did.

 

It's done the same on a few other machines in different rooms too and i've got no idea why. No odd entries in the logs, DNS is fine etc.

 

Anyone?

mm...we're under the NGFL rule here, but this is happening to us as of a month ago as well...either part loading, or not loading. I usually go into the drive and junk the stored version, and it kicks back into gear again.

Are you on about the "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" setting or something different?

I think he is. Also are offline files disabled on the share that has the mandatory profile?

Offline files have always been disabled for it and the "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" setting is set to enabled just like it has been for 3 years.

 

Any other ideas?

No I mean on the share properties not in the GPO settings.

It's really odd, don't see why it would pick it up sometimes then not the next.

Machines and servers have all had Symantec AV updates and are up to date with the WSUS server, mind there's not been any WSUS updates in a while.

I wonder if it's actually a network problem rather than a server or profile problem? Have you tried installing another network card? The other thing to try (if possible) is to move the PC so it uses another ethernet port. Are all the machines in question connected to the same switch?

Different switches and different network cards. I personally qualified each port on this network and they all exceed the spec for 1000MB.

 

Might have a snoop at the traffic when they log on.

I've had a simolar problem.

 

I had loads of trouble with my Mandatory profile for months after upgrading all our servers. It had worked fine for a year or so until then.

There seemed to be no pattern to it either, you could set it up on a computer with a brand new user, then apply it to another test user and it wouldn't work, or it would work for all users on only a couple of PCs, then it would stop working altogether.

It seemed to be a user issue at times, and a computer issue at others.

 

In the end it turned out to be Group Policies.

 

I had to remove them all and completely redo them. This sorted the problem.

 

It didn't make any sense, but it worked.

Hmm.. we had an issue with WSUS where it was flooding our network - took it off and network speed increased.. tho we're also getting Sh*t loads of DC problems and are looking at a complete rebuild!!
