I just brought a new iPhone X on the iPhone Upgrade Programme as my iPhone 6 Plus decided to develop a failure and I didn't wanna pay the ~£150 to replace what was a heavily ailing phone. See: Multi-Touch Repair Program for iPhone 6 Plus.

Anyway, I decided to get the iPhone X as I am now in a position to be able to afford the monthly instalments and I also liked the prospect of having a new phone after 11 months. I've had the phone for 6 days now and I have been quite happy with it except for 1 alarming issue. The battery drain during night times seems to be crazy. I've been going to bed over the Xmas break at around 1 or 2am, having charged the phone to 100%. I wake up in the morning, with little or no notifications and noticed that the battery percentage has dropped to between 80-85%. What on earth could be causing my battery to drain 15-20% at night time?

I've already done the usual battery saving techniques:

Switched off Background App Refresh

Switched off "Hey Siri"

Switched off Location Services for a whole host of System Services

Switched off Wi-Fi Assist

Switched on Low Power Mode

Turned the screen brightness down to about 30%

Any ideas?

Do you switch Bluetooth off? Properly off from settings, not the temporary off that you get from the control centre.

The same applies to wifi, but you probably want that on at night

depending where you put it at night it might be having more trouble searching for a mobile signal and using up battery trying to get one (so put in a drawer say that reduces the available signal)

Yes, Bluetooth is off in the settings as I don't really have any use for it barring the odd AirDrop transfer, but that is rare. I wouldn't really switch off WiFi, as I would like it on in case I need to received anything urgent and I've never had to switch it off on previous iPhones.

I live in a small flat and mobile and WiFi coverage is fine around the house, so I can't see this could be causing the issue.

Perhaps try with aeroplane mode on and see what happens then.

I will try that tonight!

What do you discover when you check Settings > Battery and learn what app(s) is/are consuming the majority of your power?

This is the first thing Apple asked me to check. WhatsApp was the biggest consumer. So they asked me to disable WhatsApp for 24 hours. I did so and WhatsApp has now disappeared down the list. Now it's Safari that is the top user.

Again, I charged the phone to 100% tonight and went to bed at 1:30am. Woke up at 7:30am and the phone was at 86%. I had 4 notifications. I can't see how 4 notifications can use up 14% of battery whilst I'm sleeping!

Whatsapp is the big consumer of the battery on my iphone 6. It’s using a ridiculous amount of power for the usage it gets

That's just it though... I've still got the same battery drain, even without WhatsApp being the culprit.

With WhatsApp enabled:

With WhatsApp disabled (No notifications, not used for over 24 hours)

What still isn't explained is what us causing drain when the phone isn't being used. None of the apps are being used between 1am and 7am. So what is using 15-20% of battery?

How big is your photo library? It is possible that it's still doing all the machine learning stuff, that is probably excluded from the power report and would account for the significant drop in available battery. If you have a home brew or prosumer wireless router you might also be able to see what traffic your phone is generating - perhaps there is a backup getting stuck?

As an aside, everyone I know leaves their phone on to charge overnight. It does no harm to modern batteries, and gives your phone the ability to do the heavy-lifting house keeping tasks without impacting performance during the day.
