Facebook access for staff

Ok, with the increase of social media on the curriculum, how many have either allowed staff or staff as a group full access or Look but dont touch though your filtering. Ours is smoothwall and they have a KB on how to set it https://kb.smoothwall.net/Content/applications/readonlyFacebook.htm but im not sure if i have to allow facebook.com and block Facebook Posts and updates.

A few years ago, it was looking as though the Welsh Government would be mandating that students/staff be allowed to access social media, and that we had to 'make it work'. We subsequently ignored them, knowing this was merely a political football (I believe it was either Leighton Andrews or Huw Lewis who was kicking it about) and it all went quiet soon after. Possibly when they realised the safeguarding/bullying/classroom control/actual learning issues that would result.

 

Basically, we don't allow the use of social media through the school machines and we have no intention of doing so unless absolutely mandated (and then something will hit a spinning thing pretty quickly).

Managed to get the read only or look but dont touch feature to work. I created a new policy group for staff | Everywhere | always.

Then inside this group, added

- Facebook: posts and updates | Block

- Facebook | Allow

 

This enables staff to login to Facebook but not post or use chat.

Also allows them to be tracked by Facebook when visiting third party sites with a 'Like', 'Share' or 'Login with Facebook' button presumably.
