PotNoodleTech Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Well I was planning to go this year but the way the infinite never-ending projects seem to be coming I'll be lucky if I get the chance. Ironic that you can't go to the once a year showcase of the newest technology (because your documenting old technology and planning new technology).

BKGarry Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 LM has said I can go on Thursday, as well as Friday and Saturday, as I really never get the time to look around properly. Am I the only one that finds it hard for inspiration at BETT the last couple of years? 1
Dos_Box Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 LM has said I can go on Thursday, as well as Friday and Saturday, as I really never get the time to look around properly. Am I the only one that finds it hard for inspiration at BETT the last couple of years? We have talked about his in previous years. Bett is still a VERY important show, but what has happened (in the past 5 years or so) is that there are no 'new' shiny things. Previously we had laptops, netbooks, tablets, projectors, 3d printers and a raft of other new physical technologies to ogle over. In recent years though, the big thing has been the cloud and it's pretty hard to show this in any exciting way, but there are gems to be found if you look hard enough. I am hoping that this year will be the first time we get to see VR make a big presence (we did hope it would be last year) and with VR will come, over the upcoming year, a whole raft of related technologies. In defense of the show though, it still does show the very latest educational technologies and related areas such as GDPR. It is also excellent for networking (the interpersonal kind) and getting to meet the suppliers and manufacturers in person, which also helps for negotiating some pretty good deals. And, of course, the free pizza. 1

I am not arguing that, I have just not come back with anything wow, I have brought cool little toys for myself but nothing have I seen where I can come back and go, this will make an instant impact. I am still going and I am going in big time, and going to trace my route on the map and highlight things, and this year GDPR is no doubt going to be everywhere. Personally I just like going and seeing all the lovely Edugeekers that I do not get to see very often is the best bit. 1
mavhc Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 The main reason to travel to a physical show is so you can hit expensive physical objects to see if they'll survive in your school. Props to Smartboard for letting me punch their 4k screen. If it's just software then that's what websites are for. 3

AJWhite1970 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Funnily enough I was discussing how BETT had changed over the years the other day. Since it's moved to the Excel it's probably got too big for it's own good as it's very much information overload. I also feel the layout at the Excel doesn't help with the big roadblocks that are Microsoft and Google in the middle meaning being able to navigate in a sensible way up and down is much harder than at Olympia (which don't get me wrong was not exactly perfect either!!). Also I feel the really interesting small startup's get a raw deal and because of the floor plan loose a lot of foot traffic. As has been said, the shiny shiny of previous years (3d projectors, IWB's, tablets, 3d printers to name a few) has been replaced with less "visually exciting" technologies (O365 looks much like GSuite which looks much like an online MIS which looks much like an online finance system when it's being demo'd) I've been lucky in that last year and this year I had/have a shopping list (last year was cashless catering, student/parent portal and finance system, this year is biometric e-registration and remote desktop solutions) which gives me some focus walking round. I think if I was just turning up and walking round blind I would be mentally overloaded with all the stands and even the thrill of pinching a pen or 10 becomes a bit meh. However saying that I love going to BETT, meeting up with friends, talking shop with a few suppliers, making sure I'm near EduGeek about 12:30 and as it's about my only staff training of the year I make full use of being away from the office for the week 1

Very was the impressive answer 2
BKGarry Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 remote desktop solutions We use all the Microsoft RDP stuff, minimal cost, and even have it that students can put in their email address and password on their home windows devices and it just adds the shortcuts to their start menus. I will meet up with you to talk about it :-) My favourite part of BETT is always receiving @witch hugs
AJWhite1970 Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 I will meet up with you to talk about it :-) Sounds good, I might even put a large mocca wokka flokka coffee on expenses for you while I listen. I have a solution I've used for about 5 years, interested to see what else is out there You had a @witch hug the other week, don't be greedy...
witch Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 Poor Witch might not be able to come to BETT at all

BKGarry Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 I'm already in the post-bett pub Bit early to be there isn't it? @witch please say it isn't so, it is one of my highlights of BETT is bag hunting with you. If you're not these, I may have to seconder @elsiegee40 or @Joanne to help me on the bag hunt. (to which I now have, in the style of "We're going on a bear hunt": We're going on a bag hunt, we're going to catch a big one, what a beautiful day, we're not scared) 1
Joanne Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 not going this year @BKGarry... falls on a weekend I'm at a training centre! Sozza!
