Vista SP1 then borfed!

Yesterday I let SP1 automatically apply to a Vista Home Premium PC which usually wirtelessly connects no problem at all. Today trying to internet access from the PC results in no or limited connectivity. With an ethernet connection internet access is still not a possibility. Running onboard diagnostics brings up "Primary DNS service is not set up to establish a connection on port "domain2 with this computer.

 

Windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically. Contact your ISP or network admin for help or click here for information about things you can try to help resolve the problem.

 

That didn't work either. Any suggestions please?

Also how much do you know about computers? Do you work with them?

jump into cmd.exe and run ipconfig /all , this should tell you what network addresses your wireless is getting and then try pinging your default gateway.

 

I would also try an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew on the wireless adapter to try and grab another ip address. This should also give you an error message that may be more useful it it fails.

I'm a techie in a primary school - have been for 4 years now. However, Vista is something I only have at home and am trying to learn about.

Good pointer, yes it's lost it's settings. It's got an Atheros AR5007Eg Wireless Network Adapter. Ping of default was ok. Failed on ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew because of wireless connectivity - it tells me. Vista stepped in and renewed something but still not getting an out conection.

This does sound a lot like a rehash of the problems that were around before with wireless and Vista... Perhaps there's a bios/driver update for your WLAN hardware and/or your router...

The ongoing saga continues.

 

SP1 brings "Free" help from MS - big deal, it certainly hasn't fixed the problem which I believe SP1 created.

 

The latest was MS asked me to send a log file, which I did. Now they come back to me saying they notice the PC has Panda Security 2008 on it and they suspect that that's the problem.

 

They want me to uninstall then try web access and if all is OK then reinstall Panda. Not impressed!

This may or may not help you: try rolling back the Wi-Fi driver to an older version.

 

My personal Vista Home Premium notebook had a similar problem on my home WLAN after I (mistakenly) updated the Atheros AR5007 driver through Windows update. Vista would not even connect to the WLAN, although the network was perfectly okay (tested by my XP desktop).

 

The only way I could fix it was by uninstalling BOTH the NIC driver as well as the Wifi driver, and reinstalling older versions off the laptop's driver disk.

 

Updating drivers through MS update often seems to create trouble.

An update this does appear to be a SP1 / Panda conflict. I acessing Panda and turned off the firewall and had full connectivity again. However, as might be expected turning the Firewall back on and no more Internert access. I just need to try and figure out what it is in the Firewall setting that specifically requires enabling!

better than my sp1 prob.

install, reboot, log in, monitor goes into standby. machine is still running but vga has stopped completely.

ive been into safe mode and its fine. ive reinstalled drivers, ive even uninstalled sp1 but it had left something in there, so had to resort to system restore from the night before.

Thank you for your email. SP1 had wrongly order the LSP layers of many customers computers. This means that the firewall cannot function properly. You need to get the layers back in the correct order so that the firewall will work again.

 

Ran "netsh winsock reset" and shut the PC down but on reboot still no Internet! I'm still trying to make my mind up if it is SP1 for Vista or Panda that sucks!

Panda is on my list of NEVER EVER use. I've been there and tried it. It rates up there with Norton and McAffee for not being all that good.

 

I now use ESET NOD32 Home Security at home. Give that a whirl Specky. You can download a free 30 day trial on it. Antivirus Software - from ESET

 

I used to love Norton, but after I saw how much it slowed down mine and others PC's I moved away from it.

 

Kaspersky is also meant to be very good.

 

I've had no problems with NOD32 and Vista ULtima with sP1 at all.
