Hi all sorry for sounding a bit thick here but I'm getting odd readings on Speedtest.net website.

 

From a desktop I'm getting over 90MB DL, 80MB UL.

From Wi-Fi connected computer I'm getting 8MB DL, 18MB UL

 

Is that expected behaviour or does that point to a Wi-Fi related issue?

I would say it points to a wifi issue, is it just one device or any that you connect? also is it on any AP you connect to or just one?

Depends on how things are setup, are the AP and the Ethernet plugged into the same cable?. Is anyone else using the Wifi? Are there any restictions in place on the wifi?. Theres no reason why the wireless shouldn't match the wired.

in a domestic setting, my Father (on bt fiber) was getting terrible internet, after I plugged him in it was amazing. (80+) He has 10 plus devices and is surrounded by other wifi. The only conclusion was that because some fool neighbour had off set his 2.4ghz channels (not 1,6,11) the APs were unable to share the airwaves. This crippled most of his equipment that saw a strong signal but was unaware that it was polluted. He's buying more 5ghz dongles!

Perhaps try that same wireless client through different APs in different locations. That's quite a big difference, but if the WiFi link was terrible (for whatever reason) it would explain the results.

 

This is the sort of thing I'd want to test when there's hardly anyone about (or at least once all the kids have disappeared).

It also depends on the initial negotiation - take a look at the link speed and let us know what speed was initially set, its also good to check device drivers as older drivers on newer AP's will neg slower links if not supported.

Also check how access is granted out to the WAN - walled garden/client isolation, bridged to LAN and then out usual way or completely separate zone, any policies different wrt Filtering and scanning.

It wasn't something I could have got to the bottom of myself I don't think. Our provider was here a long time and in the end found that it was the Management VLAN for the APs that was interfering with the traffic. He took that off (or changed a setting on it) and the speeds increased from around 8MB up to around 40MB. Hope this helps someone else.
