[windows software] Windows 365! How does the licensing work?

Hi,

 

How is the education licensing designed for this? I have heard mixed things. One reseller mentioned you had to buy licences for staff and pupils, and then i read that you only need to licence all staff. I am a bit confused....any licence experts out there? Do you have to have OVS?

Hi,

I've done a bit of a intro blog post to what the new licensing is. Its technically called Microsoft 365 Educaiton rather than Windows but it just shows more suppliers dont know what they are talking about.

You are now licensing staff (not pupils) based on their use of a computer. If they use a computer they will need a Microsoft 365 A3 license where as if they are ground staff and just use a mobile device, they will only need to have an Office 365 A1 license. Happy to chat about this on the phone as its hard to explain in so short few words but keep an eye out for more info soon as I've put together some comparisons and will soon be writing a "Which licenses do I need" piece

I should also add that the number of licenses you buy for staff will give student licenses. for example, for every Microsoft 365 A3 license you buy for faculty, you get 40 students.

@apearce what happens with existing 3-year 'legacy' ees agreements (and things like minecraft)?

You will be able to renewal based on the old agreement for 1 more year however after that you will need to do EES 2017.

 

Personally and being a Microsoft cloud guy, the licensing change is really good for education.

@apearce - I more meant, where does one stand if they want to make use of minecraft etc 'now' - but are in a 3yr. I know with some benefits the software assurance stuff kicks in - other times not. As opposed to saying I didn't like the change

Let me go back and ask about the minecraft question - i understand what you are saying with your point but this is just for minecraft not anything else

you agreement will stay in place - you have take a three year agreement, its after that you will get the benefits of microsoft 365 edu.
