Mac Management Survey

Hi All,

 

I'm currently looking at how we're managing our Macs, which are used in our video editing and music classrooms. I think it all works very well but we've recently been getting some complaints from the users such as trouble saving work or slow printing. Some of this is user education issues, however, sometimes there are real problems. I thought it would interesting to find out how everyone else manages their Macs, and whether we're using the best tools for the job.

 

Could you reply with the following:

 

How many Macs do you have?

What software is used on the Macs (e.g. Final Cut, Logic etc.)?

Are they connected to your domain or LDAP directory?

What management tools do you use?

Are you using network or local storage?

If using local storage, how do you backup?

What challenges do you face with your Macs?

 

For info, this is what we're doing:

Number of Macs:160 - 170 Apple iMacs

Applications: Final Cut, Logic, Adobe CC, Office, Sibelius

Connected to our LDAP domain for signing in and mounting network drives

Munki and Puppet with various scripts

Network storage for general files and local storage for large video editing/music projects

Local storage is backed up every couple of hours

AD Intergation

What management tools do you use?

JAMF, Munki

Are you using network or local storage?

Network - Synology

If using local storage, how do you backup?

Raid 5

What challenges do you face with your Macs?

Password Management but resolved using NoMAD

What software is used on the Macs (e.g. Final Cut, Logic etc.)? Office 2016, Logic, Adobe CC, Garage Band, Scratch, Lego, Sibelious, 2D Design, Dance eJay, Lego Mindstorm, Python, Libra Office, Safari , Chrome.

Are they connected to your domain or LDAP directory? Active Directory connected

What management tools do you use? Munki, Deploy Studio

Are you using network or local storage? Network storage on iMacs, local storage on Staff Macbooks

If using local storage, how do you backup? Crashplan for staff Macbooks

What challenges do you face with your Macs? Cannot think of any, they just kind of work.

Software - Office, Logic, Pro Tools, CS6, Garageband

AD integrated, Mac Server running Profile Manager

DeployStudio for imaging,

Network storage - AD home areas plus Netgear ReadyNAS

Normal backup routine plus backup NAS

Challenges? The fact that things randomly break that were working perfectly fine the day before, en-mass. Loop indexing in Garageband. Users saving locally then losing their files.
