i5 PC Activating monitor but only black screen

Hi all,

 

Having issues with a motherboard and i5 CPU. I found the bundle in a PC that I didn't know or forgot was there. Thought would be a good PC for the heads PA who is having trouble with hers. Built it in to a new case with 500w PSU and 8 GB RAM (the PSU and RAM are in working order as used in my old office PC).

Put it all together and switched on, fans started, no POST beeps, monitor activated and there was a lit up black screen. I waited and waited and waited no BIOS/motherboard (MSI) icon. Switched off PC and tried again, same result.

 

Troubleshooting Process i have gone through:

Reseated CPU

Cleaned slot and reseated RAM

Tried new RAM

Reset BIOS

Replaced BIOS Battery

Tried VGA monitor

Tried HDMI monitor

 

Any other ideas?

 

I assume motherboard is toast, which is why it was not used.

how to the capacitors look on the motherboard have they got a dome on them or are they flat

Had a black screen with some laptops Novatech running Windows 10 ver 1607 did a clean install of vers 1703 and it works fine. So I put it down to the windows drivers in the ver 1607 but with a laptop you can plug an external monitor into it and get into windows.

 

I would stick another compatible graphics card in it as mentioned earlier by 3s-gtech.

3S-Gtech - Graphics card did it, was looking for spare only had PCI available so plugged that in and away it went yay!!!!!!

 

Not sure why on-board graphics arn't working.

If it's a Sandy Bridge or later CPU, the graphics die in the CPU may be damaged. Not much on the motherboard to stop working really, could be part of the chipset but less likely. If it's a Nehalem i5 the damage may be to the board itself. Either way, if you can bypass it with a cheap PCIe graphics card it should be fine.
