Streaming Video using Windows Media Services 2008 – What Rules in ISA?

Hi All,

 

I have posted this in the VLE section, as Videos play a central role in any VLE platform.

 

Background:

 

I have got Windows Media Services 2008 installed on a Windows 2008 Server Box.

 

I can now stream content internally on the network.

 

I am Looking at making it accessible externally now.

 

MS Give you sample content file and path, I am going to use this to test working externally.

 

mms://Servername.domain.local/encoder_ad.wmv

 

Problem:

 

I need to get this working externally……

 

• What rules would ISA 2006 need to achieve this?
   
  
• I assume a forwarder from the ISP would be required, e.g. EduGeek.net
   
  
• Anyone know some quick conversion software from MPG to WMV ( I am looking at MS Encoder 9 at present)

Strangely enough, I am just looking at doing the same thing today so maybe we can help each other out?

Here's what I found so far, you can modify your web publishing rule to allow "Link Translation". This basically redirects non-internet url's to a recognisable internet URL. (i.e. mms://video-server/test becomes https://www.mywebsite.com/test).

I also presume you would have to set up an access rule to allow mms through your ISA but so far, not had much luck....

I think there are standard protocol definition already defined in isa for this one if RTSP Server, the other one is MMS among others. Have a look at the the "Streaming" section of the protocols that comes pre-defined with isa.

 

You may need to consider using server publishing rules rather than web publishing rules.

Yes, RTSP is for Real Technologies and MMS is for Microsoft I believe.

I thought that Link Translation meant you didn't have to publish the server?

I have had this working for a while using Server 2003 and ISA 2004. The only way I could get it to work was to create a rule that used the "MMS Server" traffic protocol which allows inbound TCP port 1755 and outbound UDP port 1755 with the application filter "MMS Filter" active. Then just point it to your mms server ip address.

 

To be honest we don't really use it any more as we are using flash and flash video objects as they work across most platforms not just Windows with less hassle.
