Installing updates on a Hyper-V host

I do not use WSUS for our primary school hyper-V host but just install them manually each month. I just wondered if its worth shutting down and vm guests (we have 2, DV & Data) before installing the updates or should I just let the host do a reboot and re-start the VMs automatically.

 

Probably does not really make a difference but just wondered what others were doing.

I always install the updates, manually shut down the guests when it has finished installing, then have them set to automatically restart on reboot. Has worked well over the past few years, but not to say that's the best way. My hosts have another set of WSUS policies so they don't install or reboot without me telling them to, which gives me a little more reassurance (only five hosts so not too much work).

I usually shut the hosts down, install updates manually and reboot. Then the host starts its VMs.

 

Can't say i know if it makes a difference, just kinda seems the right thing to do? [emoji3]

Yes you should shut them down, then update and restart.

If it was clustered, you could just update and restart.

if it was clustered then you use "cluster aware updating" which doesnt do any shutting down of the guests during the node updates - it simply moves them about as necessary.
