ReverentCreature Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 With regards to licensing and data protection do you allow staff to add their personal Apple IDs onto their iPads? They were very unrestricted here. I have moved our iPads all over to Lightspeed Mobile manager controlled through the schools Apple ID. So the sign in option is now greyed out for staff. But I know I'm going to face a backlash form some staff. How have you explained this?
atcoates Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Surely they would only need the apps that the school provide for them so they can deliver lessons or administer their pupils etc. They should all be provided by the school and be no requirement for a personal itunes account IMO.

It might be the case that some of them have purchased stuff on their own IDs and that's now been backed up to iTunes on my laptop when I have enrolled the iPads. I m not sure if that is the case how easy it would be to shift those items to the schools ID.
atcoates Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 If they are apps that staff need to do their job and agreed by SMT etc then the school should be purchasing for them anyway. If they have paid for apps for their own personal use then that would be down to them. They would still own those apps under their personal apple id if they ever left your employment. It's easy enough to buy new apps through VPP but would be worth finding out if everyone needs the apps etc or just a few people. Apple 50% app price reduction only kicks in after purchasing 20 apps. 1

I get the feeling that they were just signed in because it was possible to more than anything else.

And I suppose you are going to research the apps that these teachers will need in their lessons are you....? iBooks with thousands of great free content and materials for teachers to use, can not be assigned to devices, only to either a personal or Managed Apple ID.
atcoates Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 (edited) My viewpoint comes from Primary schools so maybe different from yours. Staff only really use apps in my schools and I've recommend quite a few apps to them. Other app choices come from staff returning from courses, or just apps that support the software they already have Smart Notebook, Target Tracker etc. Where staff want a new app it would generally be of use for others so I purchase one copy, assign to their Ipad. If they app works well we purchase more and distribute to everyone else. No experience of purchasing books and my comments related just to apps. Edited October 18, 2017 by atcoates

Brimstone I understand that this is where DEP comes in. Apps and Books can be assigned to the serial number of the device. I have all iPads now supervised in Lightspeed using Apple DEP. Incorrect...DEP has nothing to do with apps and content. iBooks and iTunes U courses and materials can only be assigned to a user, either a personal or managed Apple ID. Apps can be device assigned so do not require an Apple ID. 1

If you have devices shared then assigning devices to users in lightspeed would be a lot of work and not required as Lightspeed supports device assigned apps. You will only need to create a Managed Apple ID for each iPad if you decide to start assigning iBooks. A Managed Apple ID is created in Apple School Manager and owned and managed by the school not Apple, they are created when you create accounts in ASM. An MDM like Lightspeed can then silently invite those users into managed distribution, users do not get an invite they have to respond to. Now you can buy free and paid for iBooks and assign content to those teachers and students, this content can not be revoked from the Apple ID.
Jamman960 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 (edited) We assign staff a managed ID to sign into iCloud with and then get them to create a personal id using their work mail address to enable them to download their own apps/create iTunes U courses(this is then linked back via our public iTunes U site enabling their personal id's to contribute/manage their courses)... I wouldn't want them using an ID they use elsewhere though I prefer our staff to be able to download their own free apps and get us to purchase their paid apps, if they decide one is worthwhile and needs installing for students we'll grab it via VPP but I'd rather them not have to put in a request just to try an app that they might decide isn't worthwhile within 5 mins, at the same time its more convenient for them to be able to do it in their own time without waiting for us to put it all in place. Another annoyance with Managed ID's is being unable to purchase additional storage... we're getting a few filling it and having no recent backups, 5gb doesn't go very far with our EYFS staff & tapestry Edited October 20, 2017 by Jamman960 1
