Steve21 Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 Morning All, Trying to cost out a replacement suite of machines and all software for when we're looking at Win10 and struggling to find any kind of Adobe pricing that makes logical sense! (Only looking at rough pricing as it's going to be part of a whole suite replacement) Based on their own website (so no doubt resellers might be slightly cheaper) are you really paying £350 a year per device for a new version now?!? (Pre-volume) https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/buy/education.html I know a lot of it you could use alternative software, but Art are pretty fundamental on sticking to photoshop and, IT want Dreamweaver and by that time it's already cheaper to buy the whole package... flyinghaggis Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 (edited) It's really frustrating as it's basically forcing us to move away from Adobe software as the standard for web/photo/movie/DTP. We used to have Creative Suite 5 on all computers throughout the school whereas now we've had to limit the install to just a couple of labs to keep prices in line with what we were paying previously Adobe seriously need to review this as they're pushing educational establishments towards cheaper competitors (and free alternatives). I was told that only CS6 and CC are support on 10 officially by Adobe, and we're already running into problems with things like Raw levels in Photoshop on 7 as it is. The problem being any day a random 10 update could nuke it if it's not supported :s Thanks, Steve

mavhc Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 I'd use wordpress for design (web vs paper is a last millennium thing), blender for video editing (nice msi installer), inkscape for vector graphics (ok msi now available). Photoshop is the one program that's still popular, but they make buying that by itself annoying because they really want everyone to use their other products. GIMP has a single window mode now, which makes it less confusing to people (no msi)

However it does install on my Windows 10 machine without any issue! I'm firing up my new test environment now to see if it installs OK on that.

Joking aside, all the reports I've had are very 50/50, Some work fine and others can't even get it to install it seems, and with Adobe not really helping that's why I'm pretty confident for whole school usage it needs upgrading Steve

Taken in isolation, compared to business pricing, I'd agree the rates seems reasonable at first glance. The problem is that Adobe went from offering a one-off site licence for the school on CS5 to an annual per-device licence for Adobe Cloud. This would have meant annual cost went up by a factor of 10 in the transition to Adobe Cloud if we'd rolled it out to all the locations we previously had CC5. Edited October 16, 2017 by flyinghaggis
synaesthesia Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 Well, both Premiere Pro and Photoshop run absolutely fine for us with some testing, can't see any real issue. Still, just be sure we've started preliminary checks for licensing etc. Daft that the whole Adobe CC suite is cheaper than either Premiere or Photoshop on their own Just installs normally straight from the image the adobe system creates. Will need to do some more testing this week on whether it still behaves OK with student mandatory profiles & appdata etc. 1
Max_Power Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Hold a valid site licence for CS5.5 which was bought quite a while back now, (not to jinx it) but it is still working perfectly fine on Windows 10 Education and has been for a couple of years, deployed via SCCM. Cant justify the cost for the latest version of CC when it's based on a per seat basis per year. We understand the risk of a MS update bombing it and in which case we'd be forced to look at alternatives. Some staff / students are already using paint.net as an alternative to Photoshop - completely understand its not got all the "bells and whistles" Photoshop has, but it would seem not everyone uses the wide range of tools within it, thus said both are installed in the various suites around site because some people do use the tools within. Never used Premier Pro though and its not part of Creative Suite. 1

Sir Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 I know I know but the whole suite for this....and so heavily used in our place... 21 is per machine per year... Appdata heavy indeed as writes back every2 mins by default iirc... changed that straight away...
