Setting up a network

Hi All,

 

not sure if am in the right forum.

 

I want to set up a network at home to to duplicate a work environment so that I can practice .

 

I have a HP microserver (N54L), a hp switch (hp 1410 8 port) planing on getting a ubiquiti network edgerouter er-x-au 5 portgigabit router.

 

***The plan is to install server 2012 on the microserver , install hyper v then on the hyper v install 3 different server for printing ,application and active directory .then configure a back up .I will be backing up to an external hard drive.

 

i have an EE broadband.

 

Please how do I configure this network to look very proper?

That’s quite a broad question. What have you done so far?

I have installed server 2012 on the microserver ,connected my server to the EE modem then I connected my hp switch to the server,then a laptop to a port on the switch but I can't get any network connectivity

 

Modem---hp server--hp switch-- laptop and no connection . I ran ipconfig on the laptop and i gets 169.254.32.140 ,255.255.0.0

 

what next please?

So it’s not obtaining an IP address. Have you configured anything such as DHCP and DNS etc or is it a clean install?

Thanks for your response. It is just clean install no configuration yet.do I need to configure DHCP and dns before connecting my switch to my server?

The first things you need to decide on are is my server powerful enough to do what you want sorry to say it’s not!

This server has a 2 core CPU so you will have to have one for the physical server which only allows you to run 1 virtual server at the same time, so maybe just install the services you need directly on the physical server and don’t worry about virtual side of things.

The EE modem how does this plug into the server please?

Thanks for your suggestion. In that case I will have just one virtual server. The i plug a cat 6 cable from the server to the modem.

Ok so if your EE router has 4 Ethernet ports and you have you server plugged into 1 of them, you should be able to plug your laptop into one of the other ports of the EE router at which point your laptop should get an IP address from the EE router.

 

If I have understood you second post you plugged you laptop into the HP switch and you had the switch plugged into the server and no connection to the EE router?

If this is correct then the laptop did not get an IP as you have not yet setup a DHCP server.

I disagree with this. 2 cores doesn’t mean you can only have 1 VM. You can have more but performance may not be good.

 

But for a practice machine I’ve run 4+ VM on a 2 Core CPU

The biggest use will be on the RAM not on CPU, as long as you do not need to install any single VM that goes over the Virtual cores you will be fine.

 

I still use my trusty N36L microserver at home for Lab work, with 4 NICs, 8GB Ram, does me fine as a LAB server and backup if one of me other hosts goes bang.

 

I've jus bought a Intel NUC for my main home network running ESXi with an USB to NIC adapter, 32GB, 256GB M.2 for OS and a 1TB HDD for the VM's. Got 8 VM's running on its i7 CPU. Wouldn't use ion a production network but fine for home use.

 

I'd suggest buying one of the suitable MS Exam study guides on Server 2016, run through the labs to set up your network and then take the exam.

It can be done.

When you setup your AD, make sure to configure DHCP and DNS. This sill take care of assigning IP's to your devices or you could have the edgerouter handle it.
