WSUS Server Specs

We buy our CAL's when we buy new equiptment, so there per device.

So i don't think i'd need to.. Well hopefully not anyway... CAL's confuse me.

I've just installed WSUS on one of our old decomisioned servers, it used to be a very very old NAS server. it's running a Zeon 2.4Ghz CPU, 1Gb RAM and 500Gb HD space spread over 3 disks. I downloaded all updates needed for our equipment and it took up about 40 Gb.

 

It's quite easy to set up.. but definately read the whitepapers on it before you start.

 

One thing to be careful of, especially if updates haven't been done for a while, don't let it go and push updates out across the network straight away, wait the evening or weekend, we didn't think about it, but the extra bandwith useage brought our network down to a crawl for the entire day.. DOH!!

I'd also recommend not letting it push out any updates automatically!

 

I'm always hearing people say "this update killed this, that one killed that".

 

We always test each update before releasing it.

We have to allow it to push out updates as we dont have enough tech time to do the job and yes it does break the occassional machine but normally when someone truns off the machine when updates are installing.

Im gonna be setting up a temporary WSUS server until i get around to using SCCM.

 

Ive got a LaCie NAS thats basically an Epia 1Ghz/256Mb ram & 2x500Gb HDDs that i have running as storage server.

Would that be good enough for WSUS?

It's dependant on the number of clients you have and how often they check in.
