Apple Watches and other wearable technology

Afternoon All,

 

We are currently going over our E-Safety policy and the question about wearable technology has come up. We do not permit the use of mobile phones and any other personal technology that can send/receive data and that can take pictures within the classroom or around children. Staff are permitted to use their mobile phones in the staff room and areas that children do not have access to. Before we ban the use of smart watches etc we would like to get an idea of what other schools are doing?

Staff are asked to use their mobile away from students in the staff room / work room but we've not contemplated the barring of Apple Watches etc.

I wear my Sony Smart Watch around school. It can't take pictures though. Without the phone it just tracks my steps and tells me the time. I could probably take notes with it, but never needed to!

They've banned smartwatches here for students along with all mobile devices. When the kids kicked off about staff being able to have their phones etc, the response from above was "that's because they're adults. They've completed their education, are in full time employment and have earned the right to be trusted to use their devices sensibly and appropriately." (basically).

I find having my apple watch really helps as does my wife (who is a teacher). If a school phones for one of our children we know we need to answer it or ring back where is anyone else we can choose to ring back on breaks etc. or to check a text message is also useful. I wouldn't allow students to use them though
