gpjt Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 Morning fellow Edugeekers! We're up and running with 40 Chromebooks and so far the teachers and students love them!! I've added the schools printers to cloud print and done a test with one user where i shared the printer via the link it created. This worked, not ideal but its ok. I believe that i can create a group within the admin console and add all our users to that group so that i can then share the printer to them. Problem i'm having is that I create the group and choose the add all users to the group, but 1) the users don't get added and 2) inviting people/groups to the printer doesn't show up the group i've created. Anyone had success in adding a bunch of users via a group and sharing a printer to them in gsuite, please let me know how you did it. TIA
j224 Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 Not quite sure about your group problem but I've had lots of issues with Cloud Print and recently it stopped working completely. We're now using the new 'Native Print' feature which seems to be working ok at the moment.
skell Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 We use PaperCut. It has a module called Mobility Print which works a treat. Never could get cloud printing working.
richieh Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 I have just done something similar as we have just taken on 60 Chromebooks. I use Google Cloud Directory Sync to sync with our AD to get the users across, but I also synchronised some security groups so I could assign cloud printers to them, so unsure as to why you are having problems adding users to groups, but if you use GCDS then I would suggest adding groups into your sync. I then used GAM (a command line tool for google G suite) to assign a printer to the group, as this avoided having to send out a e-mail to every user for them to accept the printer. I then had to become an owner of the group using the same account I used to add the cloud printer. Then I went into google cloud print and accept the group join request, the users could then see the cloud printers. It took a while to figure out and not sure if this is the best way but it works for us. 1
gpjt Posted September 21, 2017 Author Posted September 21, 2017 Interesting @richieh! We're using GCDS and users are fine and synced using their OU so Staff, Year group etc. At the moment I have a classroom with the link to add the printer, which works. I want to push the printer out to all the users via a group with all the users in.
Duke5A Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Just throwing this out there for future reference... Mobility Print works awesome on Chromebooks, but if you're using a proxy then you absolutely have to add this to the bypass list: *rpc.pc-printer-discovery* 3
jmak Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 I'm just setting up my first Chromebook and have got to the point of looking at printing. We don't use directory sync - our Google accounts are provisioned via Groupcall and sync via that route with AD. I want to send printing to our Ricoh MFD which does support Google Cloud Printing. My question is whether I'd be better off setting that up, or should I install Google Cloud Print Service for Windows on our print server? I wasn't sure whether the latter option would work with when our AD isn't aware of the Google Accounts. I haven't quite sorted out what I'm going to deploy at machine level and what I'm going to push at user level... I'm looking at configuring them to use Public Session if that makes any difference. Thanks as always
simpsonj Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 We use PaperCut. It has a module called Mobility Print which works a treat. Never could get cloud printing working. A bit of necro thread raising; I'm trying to setup Mobility Print, but I can't get the App to force install through the Admin Console, let alone print anything! Managing Chromebooks is a bit new as we've only had them for a month or so, but I've been able to get other apps installed, but Mobility Print is having none of it.
simpsonj Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Just in case it's needed by someone else, our problem solved by @Ksavage413 turns out we needed to add the app lower down the user hierarchy then it was picked up by student accounts. 1
gpjt Posted November 19, 2019 Author Posted November 19, 2019 Just to add to this thread. Had some issues where the printing just stopped working, but being as we have HP printers managed to get them working again and also seems better by using the HP Print for Google Chrome App. Very easy to install and configure.
