One of the first things I noticed - Files on Demand only works with 1709, but isn't included with 1709. Who at Microsoft made that decision!? Talk about an oversight!

 

As far as I can tell, onedrive.live.com still includes the 2016 version.

 

Other observations -

 

- Show People button (why do we need this?)

- Why do I need Cortana to install Windows?

- .NET 4.7 included as standard, as is the October patch. IE reads 11.0.47.

- Control Panel is still there in all its glory!

- Not amazed by Paint 3D, much prefer Paint.NET

Indeed, bit of a balls up including the sync-based client rather than the Files on Demand version. Imagine something went awry internally and the OneDrive team didn't get the finished client done in time to ship in the 1709 WIM?

 

There's a delay after login before the client appears as well so it seems to provision itself per user. I left the updated TS installing when I went home so will try a fresh login tomorrow on the machine I had the updated client installed by MDT and see if it works cleanly now via the GPO settings.

 

Also need to go back on myself and double check about having Personal OneDrive disabled. Pretty sure I did it somewhere but it's not in the OneDrive ADMX template settings... calling @Arthur who may know on the off-chance :)

 

Edit: there is an org ID policy which I've configured to our O365 tenant so perhaps that disables sync to Personal OneDrive at the same time?

 

Boot and login seem a tad faster than 1703 too, so far so good...

That all looks nice, but where do I get access to those dashboards?

 

Last I checked those were all an extra subscription, but he mentioned premium feature. Does that me some of it is included with my current EES / SCCM license and some is extra?

 

EDIT: the articles I found all asked me to sign up for a free trial. Anyone have a rough cost?

Device Health? That's included with Operations Management Suite (which is a separate subscription too).

 

Not sure about edu pricing, but it is bound to be expensive.

That's the problem I have with this new vision MS are trying to push that AD / GPO is dead and MDM etc. is the future. It's just paying for what we already had and for on-prem office-based desktops it's overkill.

 

They say to take a Win10 device out of box and just provision it but we do our own work removing the (cr)apps that come preinstalled to get a nice clean image as OEM ones are often bogged down from new.

 

Mixing some of that cloud management in for mobile devices perhaps is a plan but not as a complete replacement. Of course MS would like everyone on full Azure AD, EMS etc. as it's a per device / per user premium for something that you get as standard right now.

Exactly, a bit of cloud dashboard would be nice, or build it into SCCM. Speaking of SCCM how does all this new defender stuff fit with it.

 

I'm a GSuite school so don't plan on doing any of the cloud MS stuff anytime soon. Azure AD / ATP etc would be nice, but I can't justify the cost.

Moving to SCCM cost wise was cheap compared to other AV solutions at the time, but now I have to have multiple subscriptions if I want to fully utilize it.

 

Every release of Windows is pushing more cloud and less on premise.

Seems to be the general trend. Kicking and screaming I think education will get more cloudy. Also 1:1 devices may see traditional IT Suites diminish. If you use Windows 10 S as your OS you don't really need any antivirus other than defender. The fun part is Google file stream/one drive on demand sync/legacy win32 apps. Maybe this will just be remote apps.

I wasn't responding to him, I was just letting others know about the spreadsheet. ;)

 

ADMX files we are all waiting on at the moment, I think MS forgot about them. :eek:

Just booted up my test machine from yesterday, despite upgrading the client during the MDT Task Sequence it still deploys the old 2016 version to the first user who logs in... epic fail :(

@Arthur does the Windows Server 1709 have the HTML6 RDS client included that was posted about the other day?

Unlikely, Windows Server is Core only. When I last looked, core didn't have any RDP components, gateway included.

 

However, I'm going to spin it up on a VM and confirm this for sure.

I might be wrong, but I got the impression that the HTML5 client will be in a future update to WS1709?
