ChrisERoots Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Okay...sorry if this has been answered before. But I wanted some frank responses from the good people on here before I push the button on our brand new network. ONEDRIVE - Does it actually work day to day in your school for staff & students? Do they like it and embrace it?
DalekSec Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Quick answer : Yes But it does require training and explanation to students and staff, the majority of staff i have to explain what cloud storage is to them. It does work day to day but you will get a lot of questions in the first few weeks on how it works and how to access it from home etc. Plus we've redirected all the staff desktops, my documents etc to OneDrive so they have no choice but to use it 2
ChrisERoots Posted August 30, 2017 Author Posted August 30, 2017 Thanks for the info there, I appreciate your honesty and from my early tests with OneDrive at my current site the questions thing is so true. Starting from a blank slate is definitely the ideal scenario but after talking about authentication this afternoon and feeling like i've made a decision the task still feels daunting. Will be better in the future but for the moment I see the top of the hill is far away.

AlanD Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 We provide OneDrive, by which I mean RM's onedrive for students and staff to use as an equivalent to a pen stick. I find logon slow...although to be fair doing any office 365 login is tardy so perhaps it's not surprising, but it's irritating nevertheless as if you open a browser while it's connecting, the browser window closes when connection completes even though you are in the middle of something. We dont use it instead of local network storage...but I suppose we might do so in the future. I'd probably put a read only document in their Drive named "Don't save any files here" and put a shortcut to the O: Drive. For us, shared areas use more space than users documents, and it would be good to have something equivalent that works like O: Drive mapping, but nothing quite delivers that, or at least not anything I have seen. Most users are somewhat reluctant to use it despite the ease of connecting at home or from mobile devices to access the same material. But it's only been in for a year so perhaps it's still early days. 2

With IAMCloud there is al no slow logins as it's already there within 15 seconds of login in
RichB Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 (edited) Just migrated a business over to using this as their primary data storage. Works perfectly but as stated requires training (a lot for some). You can also use a GP for single sign on (well remember the password). Benefits as well are that users can connect from home on laptops/mobiles/tablets to access files. Edited September 1, 2017 by RichB
AlanD Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 Yes ...rm onedrive does sign on automatically and does assign a Drive letter...and it occurs in the background after logoff...and certainly for us it takes a good minute or more... which is somewhat irritating...but it does give a familiar feel to use once it's there. Still need local storage for profile settings of course Because it's not there until after logon...which I assume is true for most such utilities.
Matt_Renato Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Can I ask how you are redirecting My Docs to OneDrive? Take a look at this OneDriveMapper | Liebensraum if you are after a free solution or want something to test with a small group of users before deciding on going down the route of a paid solution.
witch Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Yes. Staff slowly getting on board with using it instead of usb sticks. Plan is to set up cloud access of some sort for children's homework and then stop usb sticks altogether

Are any of these solutions reliable though? I tried it out a couple of years back and they simply did not work most of the time. Maybe windows 10 has improved things?

Maybe windows 10 has improved things? I've had this working on Windows 7 clients successfully. Occasionally things break when Microsoft change things, but it only takes about 5 minutes to download the new script update your environment. 1
zag Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I remember these is also a really strage webdav windows 7 fix that needs to be done as well to speed up the browsing experience https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2445570/slow-response-working-with-webdav-resources-on-windows-vista-or-window

ChrisERoots Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 Just out of interest. Does anybody have the OneDrive client working on their computers or are you directing people to the cloud or mapping the drives? I don't want to make the C drive visible to staff but with the restriction in place its leaving me with more or a decision than I wanted to make.
Quatermass Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 On a related note, has anyone found a way of restricting what types of files students can store in OneDrive? We're changing over to it soon, and therefore potentially moving away from what is currently very tightly controlled (and easy to monitor) on-site storage regarding rogue EXEs, billions of MP3s etc. Seems like an oversight if there's no way to police OD use...
zag Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 (edited) I've set the onedrivemapper script up and it works fine manually, but when I add it to Group Policy as a powershell startup script it comes up with a black screen and the login box. If a user types their details in wrong, or does not have a office 365 login then the black screen persists. There seems to be no way out. Just a black screen. Any ideas how I get the powershell script to load after the desktop shows up? Edited September 28, 2017 by zag
ricki Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Create a short cut points to the OneDrive mapper script http://www.lieben.nu/liebensraum/onedrivemapper/ Don't forget the add you info to the script so it works

zag Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 Thanks, never managed to get it working quickly though. We went with the iAm solution in the end. Works well but needs latest updates on computers, a hotfix and .net 4.5 as a requirement on Windows 7. Works well after all that is done and is launched though the local computer startup registry.

Thinking of doing this for all staff and students, if it would work together.
free780 Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 Well the new login experience for Office 365 may break a lot of these mappers. With 1709 the built in OneDrive client will not download all files. It will require educating the users that they have to choose what is downloaded.
Blue_Cookeh Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Has anyone got SSO working with OneDrive? I've got it all working brilliantly, but I need the Windows 10 OneDrive client to sign in automatically. SSO is working, but the users need to initiate it by putting their e-mail address in :/
free780 Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 I've done it my only concern is that on first login you have to wait for the Onedrive client to update. You need ADAL enabled and a reg key pushed out. You need to have Onedrive. exe in the user reg hive.
