There’s a little village outside Birmingham called Frankley and this morning someone ‘enhanced’ the place name sign

Probably classed as vandalism - but I wouldn't move it!

 

Reminds me of a little back road round Bangor when I lived there

Only locals knew about it but there was a very narrow section built on a small cliff

 

so it was controlled by a set of traffic lights that only allowed one way traffic at a time

 

It was just on one side of the University main buildings

 

at some point someone had drawn a smiley face on the green light - grumpy face on the red light and an in-between face on the amber one

 

The road was locally known as the SMiley Face road

 

someone from the council found out and an article appeared in the local paper saying how terrible it was that the lights had been "vandalised" and how much it would cost to fix it

(some IPA and a rag would have done it in a minute or so probably!)

 

but it got "fixed"

 

a few days later the faces re-appeared to the pleasure of everyone - sorry , nearly everyone I presume!!!!

A quirky feature of Portobello's promenade has gone viral after it was noticed by a passer-by on Sunday.

 

It seems that lockdown may be causing residents to pick up on unusual aspects of city life during their daily bout of exercise, which was the case for one walker taking a stroll on the beach front.

 

In a tweet, James K Puchowski uploaded two pictures of a small yellow sign attached to the stone front separating the beach from the walkway. Written on the plaque are the words "provided for your convenience by the Portobello Public Pencil Sharpening Project."

 

Just underneath is an attached pencil sharpener, albeit a little rusty, for anyone needing to fix their blunt stationary whilst at the beach.

 

The tweet, which was captioned "sorry, what..." quickly went viral, with over 44k retweets and nearly 300k likes on the platform.

 

Many found the discovery hilarious, with one user commenting "you'll know to bring your pencil next time" and another suggesting the feature may be a Portobello inside joke.

 

However, the beach promenade sharpener is not the only one created by the mysterious 'Portobello Public Pencil Sharpening Project', the area has a few more scattered around on other signs and fixtures.
