Hi,

We have a HR issue and we are just trying to find out if and when an email was read in a staff members account. The email wasn't sent with a read receipt.

Does anyone know of a way to still get this information?

From the 365 Exchange admin console you can go to Mail Flow>Message Trace and see if the email landed in the user's mailbox. The log will show you the time & date, sender, recipient, subject and delivery status.

Of course delivered doesn't necessarily mean opened and read.

...and opened doesn't mean read - I suspect even more so in a court of law. How often does it happen that you open an email and then get called away to deal with something else so end up reading it later, if at all. Edited by DavePa

I log on as admin, go to reports and I am sure I produce a list of number of emails received and number opened

Yep, you can see that TeacherQ received XXX emails, sent YYY and opened ZZZ - but there is no way of knowing which particular emails were opened unless XXX = ZZZ and that has never happened where I work!

Ah yes, good point! We have really just used it to show that X teacher isn't reading many or indeed any of their emails.
