My wife's workmates rave about 5 Guys. So we went (to the one at Meadowhell in Sheffield) a few months back. I wasn't that impressed. And I nearly needed to extend my mortgage to afford it.

GBK (a UK chain founded by a fellow NZer, I believe) does awesome burgers - the Kiwiburger being the best.

I've been gone for a long time, but my favourite burgers used to be from "Burger Wisconsin" in Wellington, NZ - can any Kiwi EGers confirm if this company still exists?

I do love a GBK! The burgers are great. But also the sides!

Super skinny fries with hei hei (is that right?) salt - super tasty! And I WANT some of that kiwi habanero hot sauce! Never tasted anything like it!

I've not been for a while, but the New Hall Tavern just up the road from you at Samlesbury used to sell excellent homemade burgers (and chips and side and a pint for only a fiver or so)!

I really can't complain at our handmade burger co (across the road as well) in Edinburgh. It's constantly brilliant and the Edinburgh does/used to do a haggis stuffed burger as well. Their blue cheese dip is great on the burger but I have to say the handmade in Aberdeen was a little better than the one here last time I had it although that was a while ago now.

I've yet to find a specialized burger place who's burgers are truly lovely. Personally, there are a number of local pubs who do excellent burgers around here. Where the burger is the main thing in the bun, rather than half a dozen other things stuffed in to make it tasty.

However the best burgers I've had, other than home made, are ASDA Extra Special 4 Seasoned Beef Burgers.

They are absolutely lovely. Especially with a slice of extra mature cheddar, some lettuce and a little dollop of onion relish on top!

That actually makes me feel queezy...

Agreed. Burgers should be relatively minimal - a patty, good quality bun (amazing how often places forget this key part of it and serve it on a dry, awful bun), a small amount of garnish, and maybe 1 or 2 extras (eg. cheese, and bacon).

It certainly shouldn't be more than a couple of inches tall!

Best burger I ever had was at a little niche place in Bristol. Was a wild boar burger. Truly worth every penny. Sadly, they appear to have closed since then.

@Dos_Box If you are ever in Burnley pop into Kenank's. Decent burgers at a good price. Also chilli cheese fries :o

I find the Kenanks takeaway to be much better than the eat in (less greasy) and they come out of different kitchens! Chips are better too.... Defo try it Patrick. I always go for the Wild West burger with chips and a tub of dirty sauce. Yum!

I love Five Guys burgers. They're much better than what you can get at McDonalds and Burger King in my opinion, even if you have to pay more. And the added bonus is the chips and the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines they have!

Admittedly, it's the only one of these "better burger" chains in the local town... What I really would enjoy in town is a local Tortilla! (Tex-Mex style burritos and tacos) :D

Decided last minute to eat out rather than cook yesterday evening. We ended up here : Angel Inn and with this thread in mind I selflessly opted for the burger which was so much better than anything you get from a high street chain - good size, nice bun, not overfilled with add ons but included everything you could want (maybe mushroom would have been good) such as cheese, bacon, lettuce, sliced gherkin, tomato and onion - but only a little of most of them so they complemented, rather than overpowered, the burger :)

If you guys, would like a TRUE AUTHENTIC FRESHLY MADE BURGER, then boy have I got the guide for you!

Machete or other sharp weapon is required.

Clothes you do not care about - you will get messy.

Remember to brings buns and other things you like on your burger!

Step One - Go to a field, and find the beefiest damn cow there is to find.

Step Two - With the above mentioned Machete or sharp weapon, send that cow to the realm of the dead.

Step Three - With a fresh dead cow in front of you, just remove the tastiest looking meaty parts.

Step Four - Like a real chef, get some rocks, coal, and wood, and start a fire in the open fields.

Step Five - Start cooking the above mentioned cow meat, and smell that goodness as the meat sizzles on the flames! (Some cows may get angry because you're cooking a brethren in front of them, make sure you have extra buns for these brave cows)

Step 6 - Eat that damn good freshly killed, cooked burger of heaven!

"This method is absolutely beautiful, such elegance, and a wonderful result" - Gordon Ramsay 2017

*Disclaimer this is purely satirical - do NOT attempt this, I do not have the authority to let you kill cows. I do not in anyway condone such behavior.
