button_ripple Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 ok i have a really big problem. The computer in my "office" is reporting at svchost.exe is running at 100% all of the time! This is the one that runs for SYSTEM not Local or Network. What can i do it is really slowing my computer down. After about 20 mins is goes back to 0 and then jumps up again 5-10 mins later!
K.C.Leblanc Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I'd start by checking it for Viruses and Spy Ware. If not it'll probably be a fault with a program that runs constantly in the background, maybe printer monitoring or some sort of toolbar/desktop enhansment. EDIT: It could also be System Update Server, make sure it's getting and applying it's updates.

srochford Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 You can confirm that it is the updates problem by finding out which svchost process is using 100% CPU. Use task manager to get the process ID (may need to show extra columns). At a command prompt, run tasklist /svc and find that process number - you'll see the list of services it's running and if it includes wuauserv then it's definitely the updates problem.

The trouble is that it won't - the svchost process which runs the update service is failing to install the updates which are needed to fix the problem. I've forgotten the exact details of what we did but it basically ran the necessary installer update as part of the machine startup script; after that WSUS was able to push out the rest of the updates.

mattx Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Download the Admin Bar - [ see below ] and use Process Explorer to determine what part of svchost is causing you the problem. First I suggest ICT_GUYs advice though.

No - but I don't have a problem :-) I've now looked at the link and it describes pretty much what I did last year when we had this problem. the point I was making was that just hoping that WSUS will push out "good" updates to fix the problem won't work because it's the update process which is broken.

Friez Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 (edited) Systematically go through your SERVICES and disable (stop) them one by one until you (hopefully) stumble across the service thats hogging your CPU. Edit: If you want to narrow it down a bit more, you can type Tasklist /SVC into a command window and it'll tell you what services the process is running. SVCHOST is a hook for some types of services to run upon, hence why its possible to see about a bajillion of the damn things running. Let us know how you get on. Edited March 14, 2008 by Friez

button_ripple Posted March 14, 2008 Author Posted March 14, 2008 Fixed it - switched automatic updates off. Now i have to do it manually from Microsoft update. Very strange though. It is only my computer that has done it. We have about 6 of the same computers with same software around the school and they are not affected.
