While on your school's network, you can find your IP address here
Yes, because as an IT Tech I lack the knowledge of where to find an IP.

It seem's legit, but it gives off a dodgy vibe imo.

Thanks for the replies. I get the Paywall and its nothing that somebody probably couldn't work out themselves eventually. But it's never come up as a question before. Seems usernames and passwords are simply not enough when it comes to the Paywall

They probably use your IP address to authenticate you instead of a username and password. Any request coming from that IP will be automatically allowed to access content without having to log on.

Our teachers have now applied for this and I have a copy of the FT.com privacy policy. Staff and students need to register with their names and email addresses.

In the privacy policy it does state that by signing up you agree to your data being handled outside of the European Econonic Area.

Transfer of Data

The Internet is a global environment. Using the Internet to collect and process personal data necessarily involves the transmission of data on an international basis. Therefore, by browsing the FT sites and communicating electronically with us you acknowledge and agree to our processing of personal data in this way. By agreeing to our transfer of your Data to third party organisations for them to send you details of products and services offered (as detailed above) you are deemed to provide your consent to any transfer of your Data to organisations based outside the European Economic Area.

Is this something to be concerned about?

^ Registration is optional IIRC - article access is controlled by the source IP.

They have provided a link for Staff and Students to register with so I assume registration is required.

The email we got stated:

By signing up, you'll gain access to tools such as MyFT and Topic notifications that could be relevant to your curriculum.

In September, those who have signed up and created an account will begin to receive the Secondary Schools newsletter, more information will follow nearer the time.

I read that as "you don't need to", and a quick poke around shows me stuff that would normally be behind the paywall (I think).

I have just confirmed with them that registration is not required but I am guessing staff/students will want to register to gain access to stuff behind the paywall as you suggest. As its only email address and name should we be concerned about the data leaving the EEA?
