tech2013 Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Hi, I wonder if any of you have a double system of Google apps and Office 365 setup. We are a google apps school with Gmail, Gdrive etc but now they want to to also have Office 365 for some staff. I would like to get different advice where it has worked and it has not and the problems this could cause. Any suggestions will be welcome, I am researching on this and how it would work, thanks.
HC_Netman Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 I am interested in this too as I would like to use some of the O365 features alongside GSuite. I did briefly speak to someone from MS about this at a conference a few weeks ago and he just said it up on a new domain but that there would be no link between the two for SSO. The main reason I haven't done it yet is that I am concerned that it may cause some confusion and make sharing/collaboration a little more complicated if two users are using different systems. I'm still considering it but would like to hear about a successful install first!
skell Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 We use both G-Suite and O365 using the same domain name. Works fine. Best of both worlds. We tend to push staff to O365 and the students towards Google.
FN-GM Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 We use G Suite for everything but email. However we are migrating over. I used ADFS to allow SSO between the 2 platforms and that works rather well. You don't need to use separate domains, I use the same on both.
tech2013 Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 Yep, that is exactly what I think. The only solution would be 2 domains and then create a good training programme and make sure that staff using 365 do not start sharing across solutions. Having two system is not ideal but the fact that MS office features are most of them missing out of Gsheets and Gdocs are frustrating for most google users that are used to office.
tech2013 Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 How do you handle the MX records going to google and 365 on the same domain for emails to work?
tech2013 Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 I am guessing you would need to use 2 FQDN to handle the MX records and some email going to gmail and others to 365?
FN-GM Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Your MX records will only need to go to the system you're using for email. If you use both you point it to one and use mail routing settings so the 2 can communicate.
jaminben Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 We run both Google and O365 (until we migrate fully to O365) and had to create an outbound connector within O365 via a mail flow rule... so staff email at one site is Gmail but they also have an O365 account and for staff at another site who use O365 mail.
RLR Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 This is something we've been asked. We're everything Google at the moment but some staff just can't grasp the differences between Word Documents and Google Docs. Or they have most of their work in Word format and can't be bothered to update it. We've setup O365 just for One Drive use but not started using it yet.
tech2013 Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 Do any of you using both get many issues where users share in Gdrive to a user of 365 and sharing is all over the place? and other sharing issues between platforms?
FN-GM Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Our users have accounts on both systems and so sharing works fine.
