Joanne Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 I'm wiping some machines in preparation to send away using Acronis DriveCleanser. Pretty sure it's a 360GB HDD and it seems to be taking AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGES! How long does it normally take for other people / software?
localzuk Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 A multi-pass secure erase takes hours and hours. I usually leave them running overnight. My technician wiped a 250GB disk earlier this week and it took about 16 hours for 7 passes. 2

bossman Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 @Joanne Why didn't you just replace the drives with new ones as they are so cheap nowadays and then reuse the old drives on your existing machines? Seems a lot of time and energy spent for so little reward to me

Good for you, but we get next day delivery and we have been 2.5 SSD's for a couple of years now, how much did you pay for the HP machines in the first place to get that much cash back if you don't mind me asking?

Sephiroth Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 What I do is use a desktop that boots to DBAN on a flash drive and autonukes [DoD 3 pass + blanking] all disks attached to it. I've got 2 raid cards in it to maximise capacity. I take all disks out, chuck them in the machine and leave it overnight (or longer in the case of the 8 4TB disks that I was doing last month!).

It cannot detect or erase SSDs and does not provide a certificate of data removal for auditing purposes or regulatory compliance. Hardware support (e.g. no RAID dismantling), customer support and software updates are not available using DBAN. Should you need to erase data from a SSD or require a certificate of data removal, request a free trial of Blancco Drive Eraser. So I didn't fancy relying on it. If I were sending them off where I get a certificate of destruction anyways, DBAN would be fine, but these are my responsibility... and I don't actually know where they will be going!

Yeah, good point. I keep all hard drives in storage until they're sent off to be securely shredded (physically), so isn't really an issue for me. can you not have a similar setup with Acronis DriveCleanser though?

Sephiroth Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Server upgrades put me in the joyful position of having several RAID controllers laying around, not doing anything some time ago... @Blue_Cookeh I do that with drives that are so far gone I can't even DBAN them! Used to do it in the office, but stopped when I got told off for putting hammer shaped dents in the [concrete] floor.
