denzal2k4 Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Used to use these on sites for EPOS, one for a WAP and one for the till, they work fine but the speeds will be reduced ie you will get 100Mb on each one. Think they may not be as effective on more complex networks with vlans etc. 1

dry Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 As has been said I believe they limit speeds on both clients to 100mb/s, so be aware of that. You generally can't mix n match splitters from different suppliers as the wiring is unique to each model of splitter in my experience. We've successfully used them temporarily in the past for difficult runs or where budget constraints put a hold on new cable runs. I do find it useful to have a few in a cupboard for cabling emergencies! 1

We have an IP phone that is on a wall that needs to be moved to a desk and then they want a machine in there , so maybe and old desktop or a laptop. But wifi patchy in there as its a medical room and wasn't needed before hence the cabling. (this is to save money on recabling..) Thanks for the info

It'll depend on the hardware that you buy, but VOIP phones with passthrough that we had at a previous employer limited the passthrough port to 100mb/s- meaning there's no speed disadvantage to using a splitter (but one less port on the switch would be used which would be an advantage).

denzal2k4 Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Wouldn't agree that they are a nasty hack, in a perfect world yes spend £200 on another VOIP phone. In the real world by all means use the existing infrastructure and devices designed to split the port into 2 usable connections, I rarely need a 1Gb connection on my desk phone tbh. This all also depends on what speed wireless the laptop has and could you just use the cable as is on the phone and use wireless on the laptop as this may be faster than 100Mb anyway.

mjk Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I need to qualify why I think they are a nasty hack: UTP cable is a twisted pair because the 'spare' wires are NOT redundant in 100Mb/s. They are there because a physicist called Michael Faraday found that interference can be reduced or eliminated by using twisted pairs. Thus the twisted wires shield other connections from interference caused by the data stream and the data stream is shielded from RF external interference. On top of these considerations, have a think about what is going on in an environment where you are mixing gigabit and 100mb/s. The 100mb/s connections are competing for bandwidth against something with ten times the amount. Think about how TCP windowing is going to work here? the 100mb/s clients are going to be at a huge (more than ten times) disadvantage when the network gets busy. I'm not saying spillters don't work, I'm saying they are a nasty hack.

Davit2005 Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 +1 . Stay away from Splitters, they are an absolute PITA and should only be used as a absolute last resort. Most (decent) IP phones have passthrough. With most IP phones you'd tag Voice vlan traffic and untag data traffic and the phone deals with it.

MatthewL Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I'd avoid at all cost and would always run another cable if needed, one reason why I don't run single ports anywhere. Don't forget if you do have to use them to use one at both ends, might sound stupid but I've seen people trying to just use one! Or if you cannot run another cable use a mini switch type thing, will me more reliable that these things but that is just my view.
