Yet some footballers are racist, get a few match ban. Some footballers angrily lash out at others causing injury, few match ban.... Just seems a bit steep.
Mark182 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 It's over 1000 bets over 10 years. The PFA & FA state you cannot bet on ANY football games, involved or not. He knew what he was doing but yes 18 months is very harsh.

Thats pretty bad tbh, being on the inside he will know what is being said in the training etc about the match even if he didnt play.

HarryMonkey Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Yes 18 months is harsh considering that shorter bans have been given to players that were in a position to influence games that they had bet on. Unfortunately Barton is one of those players that football is (arguably) better off without and I wonder if the FA have seen this as an opportunity to remove him from the game altogether (or at least the upper levels of it).

This isn't exactly his first offence of any sort The FA showed their displeasure in someone who has repeatedly failed to choose a sensible path through their career. He doesn't seem to want to learn from past mistakes 2

Pushed into retirement early for the sake of the games reputation, hell be lucky to play again in the premiership.

Breaks the rules and gets punished. It's just the usual inconsistent FA that throws a good strong harsh punishment for one thing but does a weak waste of space slap on the wrist for another. Look at Suarez bites players 3 times yet got a slap on the wrist (while also proclaiming his innocence). Then you look at another game of football: Ibrahimovic banned for 3 games for an elbow in the face (which let's face it was revenge attack on Mings regardless what Ibra said in denial). Mings banned for 5 games for stamping on some ones head. Should have seen social media where people actually tried to defend the stamp. If we all saw that in the play ground with kids we all know which one we'd take priority over. Personally I would have banned the elbow for 5 games maybe more and a stamp on the head 10 games maybe more. Perhaps people call that a fracas? Then again justice is such ways isn't it (perhaps this belongs behind the red door because I could really vent about things). For Joey Barton I've got zero sympathy for him, he knew the rules and purposely broke them. I never did understand why a footballer in the top league just doesn't avoid placing bets on the same sport. Edited April 26, 2017 by Lonix 1

However, the rules are the rules and besides footballers earn so much money it makes you wonder why they feel the need to bet to try win more of it.
CAM Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 There was talk on the radio this morning about gambling companies visiting training grounds and giving young players betting coupons and offer leaflets, knowing they are easily lead and have bank accounts full of money. If that is true, the FA have a lot to answer for, especially when betting companies make up a large sum of sponsorship money through all levels of football. Just like F1 was forced to ditch tobacco companies as sponsors, it's time to re-assess gambling as a primary source of sponsorship for clubs and the FA. The SPFL sponsored by Ladbrokes, banners for Betfair lining the stadium, Bet365 squeezing one last advert between the player parade and kick-off and Sky abusing their TV rights to inject their own Skybet organisation into the TV coverage (and they sponsor the EFL!). And we can't forget the vileness of The S*n and their betting arm exploiting National League sides in the FA Cup.

As I said earlier, with most of them it's not about the money it's about the thrill of teh bet and the urge to win. I think the most that JB staked was something like £500 which is no big sum so it was never about the money.
