Car Self Parking Feature - Do you actually use it?

Idle curiosity. It's a feature on my Focus bought in January which I had to have if I wanted the front parking sensors, but I have only used once ... in the dealership ... to try it on the day I picked it up.

 

Does anyone actually use it as a matter of course?

My mate has it and doesn't use it as it wears out the tyres quicker as a result of the wheels moving when its stationary.

Does it pay attention to the white lines of a parking bay or does it need obstacles (cars, kerbs, bollards) to work from?

 

I'm just wondering if you were in a deserted supermarket carpark and pressed "park".

The VW (group) system can parallel park in a space 60cm longer than the car - which seems pretty good. I have seen comments that it's all very well getting you in to a tight space - but it could be challenging to get out again...

 

The other driver for our car reckoned they wouldn't trust the system, so didn't seem much point in paying for it. Front sensors are useful though...

Mine does bay parking as well as parallel parking. I haven't tried it in an empty car park. Well I haven't tried it all

 

It can get you out, as well as in, allegedly

I'd be interested ti see how it deals with bays. I guess if it has cameras it might be able to pickup the lines??

 

My car has Lane assist which holds car in lanes on Motorways as long as you do not take your hands off the wheel for 10 seconds. Used it 3 or 4 times when late at night and/or on empty motorway. Freaked me out a bit first time I used it. Relies on a camera in front windscreen.

its fine the self park car squeezing into the very tight spot but what about the other cars its just parked between if they are not self parked your not going to be happy when they bump your nice new car trying to get out.

And i would think it would by your fault as they where there first and parked with ample room to be safe (would need to check this)

Low speed bump (in most cases) should not be a problem it's the scuffing of catching corners :-( . I've had to parallel park for the last 4 years now, I've once had it where both Front and Back sensors were going ballistic during the whole time I was doing maneuvers into the gap but I know the gap was big enough.

 

Next car will have reversing camera if available but I'm not getting a self park yet unless needed for front and rear sensors.

I used to have it on my old Prius only really used it to show off to my mates. I used the camera more than the self park.

low speed or indeed any speed bumps are not acceptible. I know i can squeese my car into silly tight spaces if i really want to without hitting other peoples cars but not everybody is as confident at driving (sorry that sound really agressive and its not meant to be ) people just need to be aware that not all cars have this tech yet and need to park with some care

not to mention some cars have a better turning circle than others even variants of the same car my dads fiesta has a smaller turning circle than mine (as did his focus)

Very true. The turning circle on this Focus is excellent. Much better than my old Fiesta

in my case its big wheels and a 6 speed box on a small car. I remember a mates 306 gti 6 had more steering lock one way than the other
