How to find processors & cores are running on physical hosts -to procure MS licence

Hi

I have to renew my Microsoft volume licensing and our re-seller had said that Microsoft have now moved to a ‘per core’ licensing model for Windows Server.

We have 3 Fujitsu Premergy RX200 S7 Servers (ESX host).The reseller has asked me to find how many processors and cores are running on each physical hosts to get me a quotation.

 

Do I need to call Fujitsu service desk / VMware support to find these details? Or please let me know if these is a way to find these details.

In Vsphere client, with the hypervisor selected, the Summary tab should tell you how many CPU cores you have under the General heading. Edited April 5, 2017 by 3s-gtech

Thanks , i found the No of CPU on each of the ESX Servers- clicked the ESX Host -1 - Summary tab it says- CPU Cores: 12 CPUsx 1.999Ghz and Hope this is correct details for the numbers of processors on this ESX host.

 

Secondly for cores are running on this physical hosts - On the Summary- Cores per socket :6

Is this correct?

Please let me know.

Sounds right - cross checking the server specs you have a pair of hex-core Xeon E5-2620 I'd guess. You'd need to license for 12 cores (though you should have 24 threads).

You are right Processorr type is Intel®Xeon® CPU E5-2620

Totally I have 3 ESX host and all the ESX host have the same no of CPU cores and Cores per socket. So will i need licence for 36 Cores on all the 3 host and 18 cores running on all the 3 Host?

 

 

ESX Host1- CPU Cores: 12 CPUsx 1.999Ghz

Cores per socket :6

 

ESX Host2 - CPU Cores: 12 CPUsx 1.999Ghz

Cores per socket :6

 

ESX Host3- CPU Cores: 12 CPUsx 1.999Ghz

You'll need 36 core licenses total (3 servers, 12 core in each).

This only works for Datacenter licensing, it depends on the number of VMs on each server if you are licensing server standard.

 

You have to license 8 x 2 cores (16 total) minimum for each server, per 2 windows standard VMs on the server, assuming VMware is only showing a hyperthreaded total.

 

 

 

Windows Server 2016 Standard and Datacenter: Core-based licensing

Core-based licensing requires all physical cores in the server to be licensed.

Servers are licensed based on the number of processor cores in the physical server.

• A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a

minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.

• Core licenses are sold in packs of two.*

• Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments

or Hyper-V containers when all physical cores in the server are licensed.

For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be

licensed again.

That is a rip-off to be fair - fewer than 8 cores in your CPUs? Tough.

 

I'm avoiding the Server 2016 licensing model for as long as possible mostly due to this nonsense.
