Comms cabinet UPS

Hey guys,

 

I'm looking for a UPS that will fit into a standard comms cab (weight/depth) and wondering what makes/models you guys are using, if any? Or maybe you're mounting them underneath?

 

Just looking for ideas at the moment since we need some for a couple of cabs of ours.

I don't have them in all cabs, but when I do I just fit one of the APC ES series - cheap enough but quite bulky (takes up approx 2-3u ) and only 4 of the sockets are for battery backup. In cabs without space I mount underneath usually wall mounted, not pretty though.

We have a lot of these - APC Smart-UPS C 1500VA 2U. Only 4 outputs, but we usually use a PDU attached to it.

I got a Smart-UPS X 3000 for each cabinet, 8 sockets, 2 sets of 4, plus a connector for a PDU (extension cable), each of those 3 can be powered on/off as a group, and built in network card to email you/message agents on the servers, when there's a problem. Comes with a temp sensor too. Plus the ability to add more batteries.

 

What you need to know is the max power draw you'll need, as that specifies which model you want. More than the one I got requires a different mains socket to be installed, as it's over 13 amps.

Power is secondary here, my first concern is finding one that will fit in a standard wall mount comms cab without it falling off the wall

We use quite a lot of these Tripplite 500va 19-inch Rackmount Smartpro Ups (6 C13 Outlet) - Ebuyer as they're only 30cm deep so fit in most of our cabs

Oh, wall mount. There's no standard cabinets, height, width, and depth can change.

 

So, back to the start, what space to you have, how much do you need to power, and what's the max extra weight you can add to the cabinet without it falling off the wall, killing everyone and ripping half the network apart?

 

The correct answer is probably rewire the whole school so everything's to a central location.

When i put some UPS in my comms racks for the first time i wasnt convinced that the existing brackets would support the extra weight (cheap old plasterboard style walls from the 60's) i put a heavy duty wall bracket under the cab.

 

Something like this Wickes Hi-Load Mitred Bracket White 250x250mm | Wickes.co.uk that we got from our local builders merchant. Put 2 per cab underneath, didnt fix to the cab at all just put as close the bottom as i could. Used big old fixings as well for extra piece of mind. Maybe a bit unsightly but better than a student/staff with a headache!!
