Phoneline to lift

Morning all

 

New build going in and as per building regs, the lift needs a live phone-line in it for the alarm button. Issue is, the new build is in the furthest corner of the school from the PBX and running copper to it for a dedicated phone-line is going to be tough.

 

My question is, does it have to be a dedicated external line these days or can we somehow install a POE IP line instead through our switchboard? I did ask the architect, but he was unsure of the regs and is insisting on a dedicated line (not sure he understood the question bth).

 

Before we go down the cabling nightmare route, I'm just making sure...

What about a tablet/mobile device in a kiosk holder or similar secure thing working wirelessly? Could save a lot of money & hassle in cabling if it satisfies building regs, and should power be lost (a good reason for a lift to fail) will continue to have power if there's a UPS's wifi point nearby?

it has to be a physically separate analogue line from a PBX.

Separate cost for the sim contract, but still cheaper and easier than a physical landline.

We've just moved in to a new build and all three of our lifts had to have their very own analogue line.

I expect it's something to do with resiliency in case of power cuts?

We queried this for our last two buildings - both tried telling me it was required, but when challenged they accepted that a simple intercom handset from the lift to the landing(s) outside was sufficient.

I occasionally find myself working alone in the school. If stuck in a lift in those circumstances I'd want an analogue line to the outside world.

Yup, that was my thinking as well. Oh well, off to tell the cabling contractors the good news. It's got to be done as the building can't be signed off until it's in and tested...

Hi, did you get to the bottom of this? Only I've had the same conversation with a lift contractor today and he said it would be acceptable to connect the analogue phone in the lift to our phone system via an ATA, providing everything required to get an outside line is on a UPS.
