Anyone got any horror stories of the home kits? witch Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 My dentist charges £350 But I have a friend who has been to a cosmetic dentist and got a tray fitted and some special gel - stronger than you can buy over the counter - and she does it herself. It is pretty good and cost her around £100 1

jinnantonnixx Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 As it happens there was a programme on TV last night about cowboy whitening outfits who buy a kit off ebay and operate their business through Facebook. I only half-watched it, but caught the gist that teeth whitening falls under dentistry and an operator who isn't a registered dentist is operating illegally. Things can go very wrong, gums are particularly prone to problems. Be careful.

A while ago, we observed some random person offering these services on Facebook, so had a good chat about it. The GDC - General Dental Council - have lots of info about it here: Tooth Whitening. They regularly prosecute people who carry out whitening unlawfully. Only registered dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists and clinical dental technicians, working to the prescription of a dentist, can perform tooth whitening. You can check to see whether someone is registered by looking on our online register. If the person performing the tooth whitening cannot be found on one of our registers they are not legally allowed to practice tooth whitening and it would be unlawful for them to whiten your teeth.
