IP POE Camera for IT Classroom

Hi,

 

I have been given the go ahead to put a camera into a ICT room that is seeing some vandalism. Its not a massive room, just need it to be decent picture quality, POE and record to a remote PC.

 

Any recommendations?

If that going to be a wide enough field of view for inside a small room? I'd recommend Hikvision, but maybe look at one of the ones with a 2.8mm lens?

We have some HIKVision domes and they do the job perfectly for low cost, and they work nicely with GeniusVision software for recording them

I've been looking at CCTV this last week or so. I've used this company for something else before and they were good for chatting to before buying. They sell Hikvision and Ubiquiti

Hikvision are awesome. Their fisheye cameras are surprisingly good too, we have one that can see every PC in a large IT room.

I would go for a Hikvision done/turret camera, 3mp will be more than enough a 2.8mm lens.

Been trying out Trendnet cameras combined with a Synology NAS running Synology Surveillance Station.

 

Wow. Awesome. Leages ahead of our "proper" CCTV system which is costing us a fortune to keep running, and at £75 a pop for the lowest end POE bullet camera, or £110 a pop for the 3megapixel version - can't go wrong!!

 

* I think these trendnet / hikvision / etc cameras are all very very similar, all made in China in a ginormous factory they probably just put different stickers on them depending on the manufacturer.

 

I am not just very impressed by the cameras I am well impressed with the synology software solution!

The synology software is awesome. We had a good play with ours and got all excited, budgeting it in as part of a new system. Then we looked at the price of the license for multiple cameras - it worked out cheaper to buy a pair of NVRs

Yeh looking at that too. it comes with 2 free camera licences and then it's £250 odd for every 8 cameras you add on. I guess if you have 64 that would work out expensive but to be honest the software is so good I think it may be worth paying for. Our main CCTV system which is archaic and keeps breaking lost it's DVR recently, the company charged the school a nice chunk......and fitted.....a hikvision one - it's bloody awful - it needs a reboot once a week, its horrid to use, the desktop client is atrocious. Overall. I hate it. I'd willingly pay more for the Synology! So we will see.

We're just getting used to the hikvision NVR and the software (iVMS). Takes some working but with patience we're there. The synology licenses seem to have dropped a bit though, £149 for a 5 pack. Not as bad as it used to be.

Hikvision vs Ubiquiti??? Which is better there is only one way to find out ..... fight!!!!!!!

 

Is Ubiquiti worth the extra money?

Ubiquiti offer a very fixed system; although they're new clip-on additions are nifty and impressive, you would be limiting yourself to uses. For single home use, not bad though. If you need a choice of lenses, camera/mounting styles etc, then unfortunately ubiquiti will be a write-off.
