azc Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 If I connect a USB before signing into File Stream then the USB takes G Drive and File Stream takes the next available one. Perhaps use USB Drive Letter Manager to ensure memory sticks don't take the G Drive.
Primus Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 See here for setting the drive letter - we use it and it's working perfectly. 3
Arthur Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 (edited) See here for setting the drive letter - we use it and it's working perfectly. Do you set the drive letter via the HKLM registry key? From what @fiza said in post #245 it sounds like when the drive letter is set in the HKCU key it doesn't always keep the same drive letter. Edited February 21, 2018 by Arthur
Primus Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 Yes and it does work - without the key it just chooses the first available letter and it's inconsistent and breaks things. With the key it's perfect.
fiza Posted February 21, 2018 Author Posted February 21, 2018 See here for setting the drive letter - we use it and it's working perfectly. Thanks. Didn't know you could set a Default Mount Point. I was using the MountPoint in the HKCU hive. Do you set the drive letter via the HLKM registry key? From what @fiza said in post #245 it sounds like when the drive letter is set in the HKCU key it doesn't always keep the same drive letter. I now seem to be able to set it and it sticks. Will do some more testing.
fiza Posted February 23, 2018 Author Posted February 23, 2018 Some new updates to File Stream announced. https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2018/02/new-drive-file-stream-settings-for-your.html New Drive File Stream settings for your organization’s deployment Drive File Stream lets you stream files directly from the cloud to your computer and select files to be available offline. Based on your feedback we’re adding several features to Drive File Stream which will help you: Control when changes are synced to Google Drive (all end users) Customize the cache location (admins only) Limit the bandwidth used (admins only) Customize drive letter or mount point (admins only) For more details on these features and how to use them, see below. Customize the cache location Admins can now customize the content cache location for Drive File Stream to any directory on a connected APFS, HFS+, or NTFS file system. For details, see our Help Center on how to configure Drive File Stream. Limit the bandwidth used Admins can now limit the bandwidth of Drive File Stream for uploads and downloads. For details, see our Help Center on how to configure Drive File Stream. Customize drive letter or mount point In a previous release, we added a feature that allows Admins to customize the default letter drive on Windows, the mount point on macOS, and proxy settings. These configurations can be set at the user or host-wide level, and persist when Drive File Stream restarts. For details, see our Help Center on how to configure Drive File Stream. The_IT_Guy Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I got all excited for some sort of auto login then. Welcome features though but auto sign in would have me deploy it to all our students.

Or even store the credentials in their profile so they don't have to log in each time at each different computer they use. Don't mind getting them to log in once.
TwistedHelixis Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Collision detection - could you all vote for this feature. Basically gives a warning if a file like word is already open by another user. https://www.cloudconnect.goog/ideas/12803 or search for 'File Collision Detection in Google Drive (File Stream)' in cloudconnect.

fiza Posted February 26, 2018 Author Posted February 26, 2018 First use of File Stream by a user to upload a folder from Network Drive home folder to Google Drive. Used copy and paste method to drop it into Google Drive folder. Did the usual Microsoft dialogue box showing copying of files. After about 30-40 minutes it disappeared and it looked like files had copied across. User goes to log off but log off is prevented by drive as message shows "(waiting for) Drive file Stream is still syncing files. This is preventing Windows from logging off." It's been like that for the last 30 minutes. Any one seen this before?
ZeroHour Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Basically drive copies the files locally to the machine while it uploads so if you copy a lot it may not have actually uploaded them all yet, you have to check the tray icon to see if it's done as the windows dialogue is more to do with the copy locally rather than the upload I think. 1

Standard users here don't have access to the system tray. We did check the size of the folder in Drive and it matched the size it should be so the user has logged off now.
ZeroHour Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Ahh yeah it hopefully has done. How much data approx and how fast an upload rate do you get/have?
fiza Posted February 26, 2018 Author Posted February 26, 2018 It was only 1.9GB of data. The user left it transferring and went away. When it was looked at again a few hours later it looked like it had completed so the user tried to log off. Not sure what the upload rate was.
ZeroHour Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Yeah I just noticed it uploading on my machine before after copying a few gb to test it out, windows said the file transfer was done but the actual tray icon showed it was uploading and that's when I discovered it copied the files locally until transfer of each was complete. 1

Ok so if it's coming from a network drive then it creates a local copy first and then uploads to Drive? Seems a bit long winded!
TwistedHelixis Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 That depends. If using a laptop the user could know take it home and it would continue to sync the files up to Google.
mavhc Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Standard users here don't have access to the system tray. Why? .....
fiza Posted February 27, 2018 Author Posted February 27, 2018 Why? ..... Historical - Looking to change it when we move to Windows 10.
TwistedHelixis Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Is there anyway to stop staff installing File Stream on home computers. We give all the teachers a laptop which they can take home to work on. Until recently they were using remote access gateway which they could only use from their school supplied laptop. Now we have started using File Stream I have found out a few are installing on to their personal computers, which don't have our virus software and any other systems of protection. Also I am concerned that the rest of the family will all be using the same computer. It would be great if I could control where it can be installed / used using a certificate or something similar. Any ideas?
