Quiet switches

We recently had a problem with 2 switches which are fanless and they are completely dead. I have temporaily replaced them with a HP 2510-G but it is really noisy and in an secretaries office. I have suggested moving the secretary but that is not an option.

 

The switches we had before were Allied Telesis 9000/24 https://www.alliedtelesis.com/products/9000-series

 

I do not need 48 ports or PoE but do need 1Gb as two servers sit on the other side of the switch. What would be a good silent/quiet switch option?

My experience of the HP V1800 and V1900 series 24 port and Cisco SG300 series 24 port models is that they're very quiet indeed. Both are fairly budget kit but they're L2+.

I've got a few of the 1810-24 and yes they are perfectly competent for a basic deployment and they are passively cooled so completely silent!

We have rather beefy 48-port, 10 gigabit-capable, PoE-capable HP edge switches around the school - they are a bit on the noisy side. That was a particular problem in a classroom, so we fitted a sound-proofed switch cabinet to put the switch in. The switch seems to operate just fine (it's been running for maybe three years now) and it really cuts the sound level down.

I don't like switches that don't have fans - simply because my experience is that they have a shorter life span. I tend to use whatever HP switch is the best for the job really, mostly 1800 or 2500 series, and if it's somewhere where sound is important, either get a pre silenced cabinet, or put in sound insulating foam (just make sure you don't cover any vents though!)
