z4ydi Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 we are bout to start our registrations through eportal. We need to buy PDAs for the purpose. Could someone please let me know what spec PDAs I need to buy and which ones are the best in terms of cost, functionality and ease of use. thanks
budgester Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 My experience of doing this with PDA's is a nightmare. Issues with charging, wireless access and damage. We do registration with PC's in the classrooms.
robk Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 We looked at PDA`s but the cost and the additional cost for the eportal PDA licence meant it was a non-starter. We are using PC`s in classrooms with eee-pc laptops for PE and other nomadic staff. (Well thats the plan, all the eee`s haven`t landed yet). RobK
john Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Why do you need an e-portal PDA licence, surely you can just browse using the web-browser on the PDA to your e-portal site and do it via that?
Whitestar Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Why do you need an e-portal PDA licence, surely you can just browse using the web-browser on the PDA to your e-portal site and do it via that? No, it doesnt work like that. PDAs send a special header that informs a web server that it is being accessed by a PDA, similar to the way a mobile phone does. Because of this, you have to buy the PDA add on for facility so that it will let PDAs access ePortal. Our PE department use PDAs to register their kids. I never had any issues getting this to work, but our wireless network was already well established. The PDAs the we use are HP IPAQ rx1950.
Joanne Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 We use HP Ipaq's too. They seem to work ok. I'd say you don't really need any specific spec ones, just that they are wireless and have a decent sized screen. Oh and have Windows Mobile 5/6 installed.
StewartKnight Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 PDA = Pretty Damn Awfull Never managed to get them to work successfully... my advice.... get an eeepc
Ex-MGSTech Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I have 90 Dell Axims, (Dell no longer sell PDA's) and 11 HP Ipaq Rx1950's the Ipaq's are slightly easier but PDA+teaching staff = stressed out teacher Questons like why wont the battery last all day with the wireless on and me surfing the internet? Why do we have to keep resetting the PDA's?- because that's what you do to keep WM5 working! PS if you go WM5 or 6 look up magic button, it actually turns the X in the top corner into an exit button instead if a minimise button....oh and its free! Steve
