I've been using spiceworsk for the past year and a half and I absolutly love it. Initially I only used it for the helpdesk, but now I use nearly all of its features and it has made my life so much easier. Yes it can be a bit slow sometimes, but that is one very small negative in a whole load of posatives. @wagnerk - 4.5 is based on an entirly new backend and they only just released the second beta today. Give it a chance before you jump ship. Mark

Yep, It went from S03 to S08 without any issues at all. And yes all the clients DNS are pointing to the DC

I only have one domain controller which acts as the operations master for all FSMO roles. EDIT and yes the network adapter has stayed the same and kept its static settings.

Yep I did adprep /forestprep adprep /domainprep adprep /domainprep /gpprep before upgrading S2k to S03 and before upgrading S03 to S08. @DMcCoy No I didnt. I just wanted to test that it wasnt the old policies that were the problem. The only thing i set in the new policy was a proxy server for internet explorer. It turns out that there's a problem "downloading" the policy settings to the clients. I can navigate to \\Test-Server\SYSVOL\, but when i click on the Test.Network folder I get this error. "\\Test-Server\SYSVOL\Test.Network is not accessible The data present in the reparse point buffer is invalid" I have searched this on google and there seems to be very little info about it.

Ok, I've just done an inplace upgrade of server 2000 to server 2008 on my test network to find any pitfalls before I do it on my live network. You can't just upgrade right to server 08, you have to upgrade to server 03 first, which I did following the instructions from Microsoft. That went smoothly and everything was working ok afterwards. I was able to log on to a client machine using a doamin user account and all the correct settings were applied from group policy. I then upgraded to server 08, again following the instructions from Microsoft and everything went smoothly. But although I could log on to a client machine using a domain user account none of the group poilicy settings were applied. I have tried disjoing and rejoing to the domain, but that doesn't work. I have tried creating a brand new policy from scratch, but that doesn't get applied either. I did raise the forest and domain levels to server 2008, but from what i have read that only affects what server OS you can run on domain controllers. This is happening on windows 2000 and XP client machines. Anyone have any ideas? Mark

We will be upgrading from S2K to S2K8. Mainly because of increased security, increased functionality and the fact that there really is no point in going to S2K3 with mainstream support ending in 2010 and extended ending in 2015. The feeling was that we might as well skip S2k3. Another push for S2k8 was the end of OEM and retail license availabilty of XP this year and system builder licensing ending next year. It all means that Vista is on its way in to our networks.

Sounds like HP are trying to shift old stock before they release a new model. Cisco do this quite often.

Well after reading certain posts I decided to give Radius a try. I currently use WPA encryption with MAC address auth, but with 10 APs making sure the right MAC addresses are in the right APs is becoming a nightmare. So after following the links in this post, I am now stuck. Radius wont start. I run the radiusd start script and I get Info: Starting - Reading configuration files.... and then nothing happens. Yes. All you need is a DVI to HDMI Adaptor and and HDMI cable. Once its all plugged in, just set your output resolution to the native resolution of the TV.

Yeah, Iv'e used both and both are a PITB. We were a pilot school for the QCA software and we have asset languages tests due to start next week and the exams officer hasnt even got the username and password back from CA yet! And because we have more than 25 students who are doing the test a one time, I have to set up two servers, but they both connect to the same clients. Why cant it all be done like Cisco or IMI do it.

Cool. Next issue. I set up ipcop with a green interface address of 172.30.0.1 When I set up Karoshi, i used this as the default gateway. After looking at the DNs entires in karoshi's hosts file I noticed that .0.1 was used by MCP, so I changed the ipcop green address to .0.250 I have changed to gateway address on karoshi's netowrk settings, but it still pushes .0.1 as the gateway address to the clients I have set up. What file do I need to edit so it pushes the correct gateway to the clients? Thanks in advance Mark

I have never seen this before. I would use the actual IP address for DNS setup.

Try this. Turn off all the affected machines but one. Then manually force a DHCP renew. Sounds like the switch might be stopping what it thinks is a broadcast storm.

Try removing all DNS settings from the workstation.

Well. That scope is Ok. That subnet mask allows for those host address ranges. The fact that you have been told that you have to reset the switch to get the clients working tells me that you should be looking at problems with the switch. If you can, try swapping that switch with another one and see what happens. If you find that the workstations start getting addresses and the other ones dont, you know the problem is the switch.

Not knowing your budget all I can do is show you the projectors and mounts I get. I get these projectors mainly because they are backed by Becta and come with a free replacement bulb. When it come to mounting them I do one of two things depending on the type of ceiling. If it is a false ceiling that doesn't have removable tiles, Ill drill holes through the ceiling board and use spring wing bolts to fasten the mounting plate. If its a false ceiling with removable tiles, either metal or those paper mulch ones. I get two pieces of 3m long 2x3 timber and rest them on the metal framework of the ceiling. I then screw the mounting plate to the timber. I did have my doubts about the safety of this at first, but last summer hols we had a break in. They tried to grab the projector, but couldn't get it. The timber didn't break, the bracket didn't break and neither did the metal framework of the ceiling. The only thing that broke was on of the ceiling tiles. HTH

I doubt it. It only looks like windows. Underneath its a completly different system that it built with the idea of being compatible with windows. I doubt there is anything microsoft could do. otherwisse they probably would have already done it. Mark

Um. One way could be to get a 40Gb USB drive for every student taking the course. We could lend them out and get the students to sign a contract that says that if the drives are lost/damages then they will have to pay the school some money towards a new one. They could then save their work to that instead of the local drive or NAS. They only think that I don't like about that is that their work wouldn't be backed up on the network.

It also depends on how far away you are from the AP. The laptop will sacrifice bandwidth to keep a connection going when you move further away from the access point.
