8 Core SQL 2016 VM server

Looking to build a 8 Core SQL Server 2016 (Windows Server 2016) VM

 

What is the best way to go about configuring the CPU setup as I can set both virtual sockets and cores per socket so not sure if I do 1 socket 8 cores, 2 sockets 4 cores etc...

With Server 2016 licensing, it doesn't make an awful lot of difference now. It may have an impact depending on if your host has hyper-threading, but not sure on that one.

Would be seeing what your Hypervisor advises, VMware always used to say adding extra sockets were more efficient than cores. However you should also look at the structure of the physical CPUs on your box
