Nvidia 7900GTX vs 8800GTX worth the upgrade?

Just a quick post, to see if anyone thinks that I would notice or if it would be worth upgrading my 7900GTX for an 8800GTX, does anyone have a 8800? Or should I wait for a new card, or the prices to come down? The reason I am looking is because the 8800 is around £200 and thats my max price I would pay for a graphics card, but don't really want to spend it if there is no difference.

 

Current setup is:

 

6000+ AMD X2

4GB DDR2 RAM

Gig Network

Nvidia 7900GTX

5mb (broadband)

and my new baby - a 24" TFT

 

Mainly play World of Warcraft(which I currently have on highest settings), but am waiting for the Linux Install for Unreal 2007 (aka 3) so will want to play that at max graphics too!

I have a 8800GTX 7 hundred and somit meg ddr3 and it does everything i want it to do. If your machine plays well i would wait as they have released the 8800ultra (25% faster) so the 8800gtx should come down a bit. I got my 8800GTX the day they released the ultra DOH.

 

I do also have a quad core 4gb pc to go with it running raid stripe - this helps!!

I've got an BFG 8800GTX OC, and I can't fault it, has handled anything I've thrown at it(well apart from crysis at 1920*1200 on very high)

The 8800GT and 8800GTS 512MB are the final cards in the 8800 line. The next along now are the 9600GT (roughly 8800GT performance for £40 less, or about £100) and 9800GTX.

 

Don't confuse the 8800GTS 320/640MB with the GTS 512MB - they're completely different cards, with the 512MB version being newer and a hell of a lot better than both.

 

AFAIK they're all single-slot due to the 65nm process, and as such they all run cooler. This means that they should all be pretty easy to overclock. The best value for money right now is the 9600GT, but if you want more speed, then go for the 8800GTS 512MB or wait a little longer for the 9800GTX.

 

I own the 8800GT, and instead of buying another replacement card in future I'll simply plug in another in SLI.

You do gain some performance from an SLI setup but not as much as you would hope. I think it makes it more stable for busy periods eg lots of explosions on screen at once etc but you wont gain that much of a performance boost frame rate wise etc.

The 8800GT 512MB reference design is single slot but there are some out there now using 3rd party designs which are dual slot, also the 8800GTS 512MB reference design is dual slot.

The 9 Series of Nvidia chips are looking quite exciting with their 3x SLI setup (if you have more money than sence)

My card is currently running games without any trouble at all. Once I feel the need to upgrade (hopefully over a year from now) then fingers crossed my card would be a lot cheaper, making more sense to increase the performance that way.

What I have noticed though having some 7 series cards is that a half decent 8 card was faster than my setup and therefore I have been tempted to just buy a single 8 series card but with the 9s coming out I might just wait for the prices to drop and pick up 2

It really depends on what games\apps you are using, I have machines that have both and tbh with what I run (WoW) I don't really notice any difference between the 7600GT, 7900GTX or 8800GTX SLI rigs that I run (admittedly the SLI rig runs a 24" monitor at 1920x1200 with ease where as the other two run on a 19" at 1280x1024).

 

If you're running games that require the horsepower then go for a 9800GTX (the same price as an 8800gtx now).

 

Oh and as an FYI the 8800GTX and Ultra's also run tri sli assuming you have the board to do so.

If I had £350 to blow, that's what I'd get (actually gotta think about it, because my little 8500GTs aren't coping well nowadays)

For similar performance, you can buy 9600GTs, over clocked for £105, about the same speed as a 8800GT but 2/3 the price.

Iv got 2 X 8800GTX's running in SLI mode and it ffllyyyyyyyyyyssssssss! On my previous setup i had 2 x 7800GT's running SLI mode too and between the 7800GT i saw a hell of a lot difference using 8800GTX's. From what iv read i think the 8800's are something like 60% more powerful and higher in performance than the 7800 or 7900's.
