Ruckus unleased

We currently have a solid ruckus wireless network which consists of 20x 7363 access points and 1x 1150 controller however its aging.

 

I've got a bit of money to upgrade the wireless network but unsure which road to take. I want to stick with Ruckus but do i...

 

1. Go for a new controller (the 1200) with 20x r310 access points.

2. Go for the virtual controller and get a few access new access points and keep some 7363 aps.

3. Go unleased with 20x r310 aps without a controller.

 

At the moment we have users authenticating via AD abd the smoothwall is used as the radius accounting so there's no need to login twice.

 

Also we have our users SSIDs set up as hot spots and are directed to a custom internal web page which hosts the MITM certificate and a custom login box.

 

Does anyone have an unleased system who could provide me with some screenshots of the configuration pages so i know what to expect if i decide on the unleased.

Firstly, do you know the limitations of Unleashed?

 

500 maximum clients and 25 maximum APs.

 

Unleashed may limit you if you wanted to expand anytime soon as you would only have 5 APs to play with - that said you can always add the controller later

Yeah i know the limitations, to be fair we only have sixth form and staff using it at the moment and that only equates to about 30 devices. The school has 750 students and about 130 staff in size and from what i remember the 7363 aps only managed about 60 devices per ap.

 

The unleased apparently takes up to 512 users but was told we could add the virtual controller at a later date.

 

I did toy with the 1200 route and new aps but i think that would cost a fortune.

I put Ruckus in about 4 years ago. Was pricey but its excellent. I really rate it.

 

But when new AP's go in etc it stings a bit on cost. And at some point I'll probably have to upgrade the controller to add AP's.

 

I think thats kinda the way Ruckus work. New AP won't work on old controllers forcing you into an upgrade.

Yup, for example, the 7363s wont work on the 1200 controller but they will work on the vSZ for a while which is why unleased will work for us for now, 20 - 22 APs will give us enough scope for internal use then look at vSZ when required. By then i guess a new generation of APs will be out then.

Worth talking to your Ruckus Reseller such a @Net-Ctrl about the future of the Ruckus product range as they have some shiny on the horizon that may change your view

I'm gonna throw the U word in again, even so, it's definitely worth looking at different products, not just Ubiquiti in particular, you could end up saving money and have a better system, I'd definitely trial some gear first too, many suppliers are usually more than happy to lend or source you some demo kit for a week or so

We have been talking to our reseller about said shiny items. They look rather good.

 

We have just had a quote for the new brocade (ruckus) WiFi lease, our reseller said;

Then there is a quote from Brocade for in effect, rental of the kit on a per month basis across 36 months. BUT the difference is you can give 60 days’ notice at any point to have it swapped out and start a new agreement. Therefore you can have the latest kit as and when you require it.

"

 

But it's more per year than we have spent in the last three on APs We have just short of 45 R710 and 10x R510 and 5x R600 APs but took advantage of the trade in they had to basically rip out our 80 odd APs (7363/7982) to put all these new ones in.

Since posting ive found a few things out about the unleashed stuff which has put me off that route.

1. Role based access isnt a feature. This means we couldnt stop users joining the staff SSID.

2. Cannot do groups, so this means in one area we wouldnt be able to broadcast a guest network.
