Question on S-VHS Recording and Encoding

I have been given a load of S-VHS that are need to be digitised...

 

My question is... what video and audio settings should one use to record and encode these?

No right or wrong answer really...

 

Personally I'd say encode to H264 compatible MP4 files using Handbrake.

 

Video: 720x576 @ 25fps... shouldn't need more than 1Mbps max / target datarate. Ideally constant bit rate, not variable.

Audio: 44.1khz, mono, 16bit, AAC audio, 112Kbps tops.

 

The above should be more than enough to not lose any significant quality but keep the file sizes down.

Currently got a convertor, but it doesn't seem to work on OBS, nor VLC, nor VirtualDub (well it did once, then didn't, no idea why not).

 

Funny enough works with PowerDirector... though I have noticed a few times error messages and stop in recording as it thinks items are copyrighted...

They aren't copyrighted, it's just something to down with minor glitches in the tape, so false positives. So looks like I may have to piece a few of them together, from restarting of recordings. Fun, fun, fun...

S-VHS was a slightly different format to standard VHS.

 

It's not relevant to the question, but if the Video was recorded using S-VHS needs to be played back on an S-VHS compatable player to be viewable.

 

It's one of many lost formats that never took off over the years.
