Lets hope Ubiquiti can get their act together with some decent firmware. Many of the recent versions have been pretty poor, with a number of bricking issues, VLAN issues and open SSID config problems too.

News to me, been managing Ubiquiti for 3 years, no problems with any firmware (Bar when i tried to turn an early outdoor only AP into a UniFi one. Didn't like that very much)

Same, ours have been solid as a rock over multiple sites.

There have been 6 firmware releases in 7 weeks (this is excluding any betas), the latest should fix a couple of the more serious issues, a memory issue causing upgrade failures, and APs going unresponsive if you only have an open SSID on them. Hoping that the sporadic dropping of vlan tagging is also fixed.

 

I've also had no major issues in the past, but things seem to be more variable after the 3.x releases. I've had to turn the heartbeat off some months ago because it was constantly rebooting APs.

Anyone spotted any UK prices for the UAP‑AC‑HD?

MS Dist have listed the AC HD and released pricing- £284.35 each, or the equivalent of £269.99 each if you buy a five pack.

Any early adopters on here then?

So the wireless network I look after is pretty poor. We have very old Linksys/Cisco 54G points in the older part of the school and Linksys WAP300Ns in the new build. The old build has a lot of metal beams which really affect the wireless signal and the strength/quality of any connections a wireless device is able to get.

 

Almost every classroom has its own wireless point to try to counter the interference from the metal beams. I'd like to discuss with the new headteacher a plan to upgrade the wireless network which, if we're going to get more iPads/tablets, needs to happen first.

 

If I were to research and investigate Ubiquiti wireless devices, would it be better to replicate the current layout and get a cheaper/more basic device in each room or invest in the AC-HD with the longer range/more power? I'm moving house soon and I'd like to get some Ubiquiti points for my new place so I could get some for home and try them at work to see what works better.

 

Anybody done a similar upgrade project in a school with old buildings where the signal strength is a problem and has used Ubiquiti gear? I'd love to hear people's stories and opinions on which Ubiquiti you can recommend or even another make.

invest in the AC-HD with the longer range

The Unifi AC-HD has the same range as the AC-Pro and AC-lite at 122m, your paying more for the greater throughput and the Wave 2 features.

The AC-Lites are about 1/4 the price of the AC-HD.
