Individual Primary School logins?

Should Primary Schools now have individual logins for pupils so that monitoring software knows who did what and when? Our Primary uses class logins so if we do a report on web filtering it will only show up as something like '3C' as the user. With Keeping Children Safe in Education and Prevent Duties should we be recommending individual logins for at least the older students in years 5/6 or should it be for all pupils?

We don't even use class logins as there seems little point.

 

we identify the specific PC by IP address and MAC address and depend on the supervising adult to know who was on which computer

 

This does depend on timely alerts to problems so that IP addresses don't change in the meantime but it seems to work OK

All of our children from year 3 upwards get given their own login and they cope fine with that and it means they can be monitored more effectively.

 

At the start of year 3 they begin by using a class login until they get given their usernames and from that point on the class login is disabled. Our younger classes still use shared class logins, but this isn't an issue as there are normally enough staff in these classes to ensure they're ok.

We've used individual logins since Ofsted called shared usernames (for all but the youngest children) an 'indicator of inadequate practice' in September 2013

All of our students have individual logins. Those that can't cope typing their own name (most are fine except the really little ones and those known as something other than their first name) have the teacher/ta do it for them Edited February 1, 2017 by Sagima

All our students have accounts - even in Nursery (age 3 up). They can't all enter their own details but are expected to by the end of year 1. This is to allow them to access the other systems we use, such as purple mash, Mathletics, Busythings, which are all available at home and require individual logins. As it's single sign on, it actually simplifies it....

When I worked at my primary we did shared login up to year 1 and then in year 2 they where expected to learn how to use their logins by the end of the year and year 3 onwards they had their own logins!

We have generic accounts for nursery, r, y1 & y2 but once they move over to ks2 we give them individual logins. Most kids use individual logins for things like Reading Eggs or Purple Mash anyways so not alot of harm giving them logins for pcs on top of that.

We create individual accounts for Reception year and above, but there is a generic login for nursery and more recently we added a reception generic login and left it up to the teacher which they wanted to use (as usually in reception it seems to be the teacher doing all the logging on)

Generic for nursery. Own username from Reception. Password complexity requirements are very simple for Reception and KS1

That's good going. We usually get the line: the kids don't know their surnames, let alone how to spell them.

We use first names with the first letter of their surname (first two if necessary)

 

Where a child is known as a pet name, eg Alex instead of Alexandra, we use that.

 

The reception kids pick it up very quickly. It's a source of pride... along with the "top secret" 3 letter password that's the same for the entire class

We have individual logins available for all year groups. Which are just firstname initial + surname + random number. So mine could be mgee123.

 

For years 1 and 2 we use pGina - Open source Windows authentication to make it easier. It's setup so they can use their first name for both their username and password. Typing mark :: mark would log me in as mgee123.

Some children will have their surname initial after their name if there is more than one of the same name. (markg :: markg)
