Win 7 --> Win 10 Wake on LAN

Since moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 we have a number of stations that used to wake on LAN, but no longer do, most of these are RM One Mk 3 machines of which we have about 50. These machines are fairly old with Pentium Dual Core E5200 processors, but with RAM upgraded to 4Gb and new SSDs added. They actually run well, and all are just used in admin offices or light use rooms, with MS Office, Internet and SIMS use.

 

As they previously worked with WoL, the issue must be linked to the move to Windows 10. Nothing was changed in the BIOS, so I am guessing its something to do with the NIC driver that Windows 10 is using, which has turned off something on the NIC.

 

Device Manager on the machines reports the NICs as Intel 82567LM-3 Gigabit devices.

 

Does any one have any ideas where to start looking?

Hi, This worked for us!

Uncheck the option "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options >Choose what the power buttons do in windows.

Also under Power Options > Edit Advanced Power Settings, Check the NIC's are set to 'Maximum Performance'

Not knocking the suggestion above, but I do know that Intel NIC is not supported for W10 and WOL will not work.

We disabled fast boot in the registry which can get in the way of WOL. We also installed the latest driver from Intel which then gave us the option to enable WOL, see Configuring Wake-On LAN for Intel® Desktop Boards

With one batch of HP machines WOL worked fine with W7 and no chance with W10. Same BIOS settings.

Had this issue too, had to install the Intel driver as thimon suggested, doesn't work with the Microsoft provided driver.

We had the same issue with that driver on the HP 8000 machines. We got the latest Intel Pro1000 driver to work however we have to force it to use a specific driver for the Magic Packet and IME option to display. Will post what we have to do tomorrow.

WOL can be enabled in multiple places, BIOS, Power and Device Manager. I've sometimes found when installing NIC drivers that 'shutdown wakeup' is set to Disabled, even though it's enabled in the BIOS and have to change it to Enabled.

@steven_layton_sl here is what we had to do with our Intel Pro1000 Drivers.

 

Download the latest drivers from Intel.

 

On the machines, update the driver > Browse My Computer for Driver Software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > Have Disk > Browse to the Downloaded Drivers and click through the folders to get to ProWinx64\Pro1000\Winx64\NDIS65. Choose the top .inf file and select the Intel 82579LM gigabit Network Connection.

 

Let the driver install.

 

Now go back into the driver > Advanced tab > Enable PME - set this to Enabled. Also, Wake on Link Settings, Wake on Magic Packet and Wake on Pattern Match will be listed.

Thanks everyone! That did it.

I now have version 12.15.31.4 installed on my test station and this does now wake on LAN via Impero. I now just need to work out the quickest way to get this driver on another 50 of these stations....

Fast fingers matey, there's no quick way of doing it other than fast fingers and a bit of time. We (3 of us) did a room of 32 in about 5 mins. I've tried to edit the driver but failed. I wish Intel would sort this out!

Thank you @timbo343 I am happy to stand corrected about there being a driver for W10 WOL.

 

But, get this, mine still do not WOL via Impero but they do via Spiceworks.

Have you disabled fast boot? That can get in the way of WOL, head scratcher why Impero doesn't work by Spiceworks does...
