HI all

unsure where to post, some of our phone system needs replacing, i have no experience in it other than ringing our support when it's gone wrong. Has anyone got all their lines on SIP? This is something our current support is recommending we go down, but have heard mixed things.

Any help?

I wouldn't recommend everything on SIP as no redundancies if the internet goes down.

Certainly have at least one back BT line

This is a daft statement because

1. Most people with any other lines have redundancy. For example ISDN

2. People have redundant internet connections, for example we do.

3. Most SIP providers have a better SLA than BT does in an event of a problem.

4. You could have redundant trunks with redundant providers. Can't do this with cooper due to caller ID issues. You can have a backup but not redundant.

I have used SIP trunks for 5 years now. Worked excellent and never had any downtime with them. It has also saved a fortune, around 60% cost saving. Before we went SIP the ISDN lines caused the odd issue, not often but was a pain to fix. 12 months ago there was a small fire at the telephone exchange, it knocked most of the towns phones offline. Our SIP trunks stayed online.

You could always get a mobile phone for any emergency? Cheaper than paying line rental. We have one anyway incase of flood, fire etc.

In all honesty my knowledge of phone lines is lacking, phone lines etc was all in hand with our old BM, who has since left, and no one really picked up the slack with regards to the phones (if it's not broken, don't fix it)

To my knowledge we have 8 different lines coming in, with our connection being on ISDN30? Unsure if that's for all 8....

When i had to put in all new phone lines after the school fire the quickest way to get all the phone lines back working again was to get a single BT line put in and then BT infinity broadband installed and all the SIP trunks run over that. Its been in for 5 months now and its been great, had no issues at all.

The good thing with SIP trunks is you can use them on any internet connection (with a config change) so if there is a fire things can be moved around easier. You could get lines up and running the same day on another site in theory.

Been SIP only for 4.5 years now, not a single issue. Got a dedicated connection for them, plus a backup. We have still got an analogue line that is patched into the office, but it would hardly be much of a backup if everything did go down.

SIP is the future so anything being bought now should either fully support SIP and be run on it or include it as BT have already posted EOL notice for most ISDN services so you have less than 10 years to go on ISDN. Plenty of threads on PBXs on here to have a read through but it does depend on what you want / need.

We are SIP completely but we do have an old fax line that we have earmarked as an emergency line if all else fails. Bought a bog standard no power handset that sits next to the line ready if the sip-ocalypse were to happen.

Also found around 60% saving having moved to SIP. We have looked into redundant SIP trunks but it wasn't as simple as it could be so we may come back to it but for now we are happy that are with a reputable SIP provider.
