printer for Office needed - any suggestions/warnings

Hi all

 

Our SENCO and EYFS co-ordinator (who also does Child Protection) share an office - nad as they often have to print confidential stuff - they want a new printer to use in a more controlled manner than printing it then rushing to the main phtocopier and hoping no-one has knicked it

 

Any suggestions for something that will last but not cost too much

 

obvious problems

a) they are teachers - hence will probably give in to tempation and print a class load of worksheets - but probaly not often as they as they are quite nice (i.e. I have trained them!)

b) The deputy Head also shares the office - he probably will print class stuff (it's like dogs - some can't be trained some can't)

c) they will need colour for some stuff

 

any ideas welcome

Not an option - we use the main photocopier as the main printer already - however these two people need one next to their desks to keep control of sensitive docs.

 

Sometimes kids go to the photocopier to get stuff and there is a possibility that something confidential could be seen by someone who shouldn't see it - hence needing a low volume cheap printer.

 

Oh - and also - my home printer/scanner has gone to the great stroe room in the sky - don't use it much but really missing it . Any ideas?

In our school I have setup the Photocopier to enable users to have the option to "Hold Prints", when they go to print they can input a custom pass-code in the print dialogue, the document will not print until the passcode is entered at the photocopier.

I have this set up on our Ricoh printer and previously on Kyocera printers - should be fairly widely available.

 

The only complication I have is that once you set hold print for a user, they have to set their user code on each PC they use - I haven't managed to get Windows authentication working yet and we don't use roaming profiles.

Our small Lexmark copiers also have this, although if your teachers are anything like ours they will still demand a local printer "for confidential printing" even when it does require a release code.

 

I personnaly go for HP Colour Laser m451 (not sure if they still make this model, last one I bought was a year ago) as you can get cheap compatible toners for them and they don't seem to be too fussy about chips etc. - also each toner has its own drum, you don't want to be stuck with something like a Kyocera with a "lifetime drum" that costs a few hundred quid to replace once they have sent a half sheet of labels through and got them stuck to it.

Job retention/print hold on your photocopier. Give them a printer and everyone else will want one and defeats the object of managing printing.

I went for a HP Officejet Pro X551 for our exams officer in a shared office and it has been faultless for 12 months. Ink is a little bit more than toner but worth it i think.

+1 for The HP m451 I've got 4 of them and never had an issue with any of them in the 2 years we've had them but as stated by Katy make sure you use compatible toners as genuine hp will set you back over £500 for a full set.

They are also just the right speed for that kind of location - fast enough to be useful, but slow enough that it puts them off using them for huge print jobs.
