Verify domain ownership (HTML or DNS)

GoDaddy.com have revoked our SSL cert. for our Moodle site and have sent the details out to us to get the new one.

 

We've got uploaded an html page to the root of our site - this was done yesterday but the next stage of the procedure has not happened automatically!

 

They say you can also verify owenership by doing this:

Create a TXT record we specify in your domain name's zone (DNS) file

 

Can anyone advise how or who we get to do this for us?

 

Overnetdata host the Moodle site.

eUKHost LTD is who we purchase the domain name from

GoDaddy.com is who we purchased the SSL certificate from

and

SWGfL / RM are who manage our firewall and who we use for web DNS.

 

Godaddy help pages state:

 

You will receive an email from us with a TXT value you need to create in your domain name's DNS zone file. Adding this TXT record won't impact your website at all; it's something you can only view through a special tool which performs DNS lookups.

 

You can only create the TXT record through the company whose nameservers your domain name uses. If your domain name uses our nameservers, see Manage DNS .

You'd get SWGfL to add the TXT record.

Well apparently they don't hold our DNS records...

 

A company called 1and1 do - which I've never used before....

 

So it may have been setup by webanywhere who we no longer use !!!

If you do a whois lookup for your domain, what are the name server records that it lists?

Name Server: NS67.1AND1.CO.UK

Name Server: NS68.1AND1.CO.UK

 

I've managed to log in to our eUKHosts control panel and can see the entries...

 

Don't know what to change them to though that will give me DNS access?

 

Waiting on hold to speak to them!

Before you swap the name servers, you would need to have a copy of the zone file from 1 and 1 so that you re-create all the same records with the new provider. Not doing that could lead to things like mail delivery and the school website not working. It might be simpler to get access to 1 and 1's control panel so you can create the DNS records there. On eUKHost, you can manage name servers, if the name servers aren't eUKHost, you can't update the dns settings.

 

Options are:

- get logged onto 1and1 so you can

- switch DNS over to CloudFlare (and hope their wizzy tool picks up all the existing dns records) - which has loads of benefits and is free.

 

Long term might be switch to someone like Mythic-Beasts - they offer free letsencrypt ssl certificate (that auto renew), do invoices and generally awesome people

I've been sent some stuff from webanywhere but no logon details to 1and1

Well we got godaddy.com to release the SSL after an email verification but I still need to tidy up the nameserver mess!

 

I've asked eUKHosts what we would need to do to get them to manage it all and remove all links with 1and1 which webanywhere use - !
