Gaming PC Christmas present for Son

My son has expressed a wish for a gaming pc for Christmas, I have spent more than I had intended on one for him (delivered today) and now he has just handed me and his Mum a list with the specifications of the pc he would like , this would be way more than I can afford, but can someone please advise would he be happy with what I have got him , or is he going to be dissapointed.

 

What I have got him.

I5-6400 , 2.7ghz. , 8gb ram , 1tb hdd , nvidia gtx950 .

 

What he wants.

I7-6700 , gtx1070,1tb hdd.

 

Any help appreciated.

I'd be greatful for anything I got as a present. I'm no gamer so cannot comment from that point of view, the only thing I would have added in would be a SSD but hardware isn't cheap these days.

 

I'm lucky if I get £100 spent on me!!

Is there any differance between i5 and i7 (beside more cores) as above. a SSD boot disk would make OS/Games load alot quicker...

 

Add a gamer case aswell. lots of LEDs and fans

What you've bought is a decent machine for 1080p gaming. The GTX 950 isn't as potent as the 1050 of course, but it's respectable. The rest is a good mid-range spec, and well matched and rounded. He should be grateful, I'd hope! An SSD would be the only addition I'd make at present, even a 128GB one (M2 if the board has a slot) will make a colossal difference.

What you have got him is perfect to start out with, he can play games for the next few years without worrying about falling behind and always has the option to ask for new parts in the coming years.

 

Personally I tend to aim to keep my PC's going for 5+ years if I can by upgrading something each year such as extra RAM, new gfx card etc. The first year after I would get him a nice keyboard and mouse, after that he may want some more grunt, so possibly an SSD and some more RAM and then after that possibly a new graphics card.

 

That's my personal way forward for a PC when on a budget, keeps things ticking over nicely. Depending on his age, maybe a part time job or helping out the family for some extra pocket money for his upgrades

I think my recommendation for a gaming system would have been to buy a Geforce GTX 1060 for £200 and build the rest of the system around it according to your budget. The above will be fine but as others have said you'll probably need to replace that Geforce 950 a year or so down the line.

 

It's all stuff that can be easily upgraded in future anyway and I'm sure he'll be overjoyed at being given a new PC from santa

I would look to get one with an SSD as others pointed out already, it probably makes the biggest difference to loading times and how the PC Performs speed wise overall. Not a bad system though to be fair.
