L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 (edited) Hi all, My PC all of a sudden out of no where no longer posts/boots Windows. 2 weeks ago I rebuilt my machine into a new case and also fitted a new PSU at the same time, seeing as I was stripping down I though it was a perfect opportunity. I rebuilt everything and the machine worked flawlessly for 2 weeks, then I powered it on yesterday after work, the PC powered on as normal BUT didn't post or load windows. All the fans came on, my GPU light came on, CPU pump light came on, keyboard lights came on but no mouse lights and screens just showed no signal then went to sleep.I rebooted, exactly the same thing. No splash screen or post boot beep etc. I'll list my specs below and then i'll explain what troubleshooting I've already done. Specs: CPU: i5 4670k - no overclockCPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX Motherboard: ASUS Z97-k RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB @ 1600MHz GPU: MSI TwinFrozr GTX970 Storage: 1x Samsung 840 120GB SSD - OS Disk 1x Crucial MX300 750GB SSD - Storage 2x 1TB HDD - Storage PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 650W Case: NZXT H440 What I've already tried: Booting with no USB devices Booting with no USB, GPU Booting with no USB, GPU, 1x RAM Stick Booting with no USB, GPU, 1x RAM, no SATA's connected to board Booting with no RAM causes the board to beep and tell me about no RAM (good sign, I think) Reseating GPU + RAM Reset BIOS using jumper and battery out for 5/10 seconds. Nothing changed after doing all of above. No matter what I did the PC behaved the same. Powers on, fans and lights come on but no POST beep, splash screen.Only thing I'm yet to do that's simple is leave the CMOS battery out for a good 30mins before putting it back. If that then also fails, I'll take the backside off and make sure nothing like board stand offs have moved and are causing a short etc on the board. If both of those also fail it will be time to take the PC to bits again Anyone got any idea's before I maybe start taking all components out the case? Any help or advice will be greatly received. DJ-1701 Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Out of interest, have you tried the original PSU? Since that appears to be the only new computer component, worth giving that a try.
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Out of interest, have you tried the original PSU? Since that appears to be the only new computer component, worth giving that a try. That's my next thing to try when I get home tonight. I did think it could be that, but seeing as it had been solid for 2 weeks and is a far superior PSU than the one I took out (Corsair CX600M) I sure as hell hope it isn't that. It also provides power to everything which also makes me think it's not that. But I maybe wrong!
Boredguy Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I'd say PSU based on same issues previously. Although it might be a higher wattage than the Corsair, it might not be to the same quality. I went from a "cheap" 850w PSU to a corsair 750w and my PC booted happily every time.

Although it might be a higher wattage than the Corsair, it might not be to the same quality. I went from a "cheap" 850w PSU to a corsair 750w and my PC booted happily every time. I changed from a Corsair because the series the PSU was part of (CX) was poorly received by everyone. People said it was built poorly, the capacitors were rubbish. Hence why I went with the EVGA SuperNova G2 as it was very highly rated and reviews were giving solid high 4's some even 5 etc.
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Might be the PSU, seams the logical thing. Id also whip out the memory and reseat it, I have known that cause such things. Already tried that. A few times, just to make sure haha.
DJ-1701 Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 The only experience I have had with EVGA hardware was a GeForce graphics card a few years ago, which appeared to work fine... and the output went haywire with pink lines dancing on the screen. Which put me off them. Issues can happen with any product from any company though of course.
Matt_Renato Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Have you tried the "hard reset" trick? Unplug the PC hold the power button for 20 seconds and then plug back in and try and boot?
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Have you tried the "hard reset" trick? Unplug the PC hold the power button for 20 seconds and then plug back in and try and boot? I did, briefly, maybe not a whole 20 seconds though. Worth a shot later though, struggling to think what's caused this!
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Also try reseating the processor... I would but I'm all out of thermal paste from when I rebuilt it! So would need to buy more.
Joanne Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 if you used thermal paste the other day, it'll be fine, just don't wipe any off.
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 if you used thermal paste the other day, it'll be fine, just don't wipe any off. It was around 2 weeks ago I rebuilt.
Sephiroth Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 (edited) In my experience, what you've described sounds like either a dead processor or motherboard (or both), usually caused by a faulty PSU/short circuit/power surge. In this case, I hope for your sake I'm wrong. Good luck If you have a spare processor you can try, that may work for you. Edited December 13, 2016 by Sephiroth more info
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 I hope your wrong too. It was and had been fine. No instability or crashes. It's literally out of the blue.
GuyJD Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 My first instinct would be the RAM or CPU, I'd start by swapping out the RAM for some that I know to be good, it could be the Motherboard but as you say it is a good sign that it beeped to tell you there was no RAM.
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Well, after getting home from work I have continued troubleshooting. The 'hard reset' holding power button down for 20 seconds trick didn't work, tried with original PSU and that made no difference. Still firing up with no beep and no display. I then stripped the whole system down and remade it outside the case using a screwdriver to jump start it. Also made no difference. So now I have just reseated the CPU and will try booting it again after I've eaten but I'm not holding out for it. So it appears I'm with either a fried board or CPU or maybe both. Which leaves me thinking, what caused it? If it was the PSU how can I test it/prove it caused it before I spend a small fortune buying new parts....?
Joanne Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Kinda hard to prove unless there are blown bits on the mobo. Could just be a fried mobo if reseating processor doesn't work... hmm.
L3OUGH Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Well I can confirm the CPU reseat didn't work. Still just firing up with no POST beep. So I've got to decide how to proceed. I tested the PSU with the tester included with the EVGA unit that connects to the 24 pin main board connector and it fired up the PSU fan as it should of so thats appearing to be working correctly. I'm not sure if I buy another Z97 board and see if it's just the board or not take the risk of doing that and finding out the CPU is gone as well and just bite the bullet and put the money towards LGA1151 board, CPU and DDR4 ram.
L3OUGH Posted December 15, 2016 Author Posted December 15, 2016 Yes and yes I've tried using the on board graphics! Was no help. I've pretty much left it to die peacefully now. I tried some brand new DDR3 ram with it last night and that also made no difference.
L3OUGH Posted December 15, 2016 Author Posted December 15, 2016 Yeah I'll have a look later. Hoping the CPU is still okay if I do that though! Tested the PSU with a tester last night and all the voltages look fine so I don't think the PSU is to blame.
difinity Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 If it's anything like their laptops there's a high probability is nothing more than a BIOS/UEFI failure. Your PC is far from dead
L3OUGH Posted December 15, 2016 Author Posted December 15, 2016 It no longer beeps with no RAM in it either. Something has certainly failed. Looking to get the CPU in another 1150 board to see if it's just the board or if it's board and CPU. Think ill be staying away from ASUS boards unless they are high end ones, this is the second one to go funky.
